Hi,

I was just wondering if cresteds can lay multiple fertile clutches from a single breeding. My only breeding experience is with Bearded Dragons, so you can understand where this question is coming from. Dragons can lay fertile clutches long after a single breeding.

Also, I read about making sure there is enough water in your incubation medium (I use perlite), but can you have too much water in there? of course you dont want the eggs floating, but as long as they are not sitting in water.

my adult female laid 2 eggs this weekend. 1 looks good, the other looks like a dud, but is incubating until it spoils, or (no jinx) hatches.

My adult pair are a greeny/yellow fire and a patternless orange. you can find pics in my gallery. any ideas what hatchlings might end up looking like?
eggs are cooking at 79F

cheers,
Adam

Hi Adam

Sperm retention is pretty well documented in crested geckos, and I seem to remember reading somewhere that up to 3-4 fertile clutches can be laid from a single successful mating.
I use a 1:1 ratio by weight of water to perlite. You run the risk of causing the eggs to fungus if the humidity is too high and there is little air circulation. I've also read somewhere that if the egg becomes too turgid this can cause embryo death.
Good luck with incubation! It's hard to say for sure what the hatchlings will look like because of the cresteds polymorphic nature, but there will probably be various takes on the parents colors. :D

It's hard to say what the kids look like. As mentioned by dj_honeycuts, polymorphism is the culprit here. You can expect just about anything and everything, whatever colour or pattern the ancestors had. I call it the "Milkman Syndrome" :p

I've got a sample of what polymorphism can do to your colour breeding project.
