Hey guys,
Four years ago when I moved here from calgary my cottage was abundant with snakes ( you couldn't go swimming without usually seeing a nice sized water snake), garters were almost a daily thing and on occasion we found milk snakes and blue racers. The following year as more cottages were added and the surrounding area was chopped down less and less snakes were found but still pretty good. Last year however some idiot decided he was gonna build a road right through the forest and one of our hot spots for finding snakes. So as constuction began( we tried to stop them, from protesting to the guy to trying to make him understand to destroying their metarials but nothing worked and as it wasn't really illegal we had sit back and watch our beloved snakes home destroyed.) On occasion we found a few garters here and there but waters and milks were un heard of. This year there almost done the road and i have since yet to find a single living snake in or around my cottage (except one dead baby brown snake on the side of the road) I'm hoping the snakes have moved on and found better terriotory its just our hot spot is where they all seemed to lay eggs and wed constantly find babies basking their. I have some pics but haveing trouble uploading them at the moment as the com says the files to big:S.
Anyways just wanted to vent how much i hate ignorant self- centered humans ( not directed at anyone on this site). How can people be so blind to what there doing the forest was so beutiful it even had some blue herions but there gone to because the pond was in the way of the road too.
Anyways i'll try to get those pics up its really sad the cottage used to my haven where i could get away and just enjoy and watch nature and know thats gone too.

i know what you mean. my dad used to rent this one cottage every year when i was younger. it wasn't the most beautiful place but the lake always seemed so *alive* we missed going a couple of years and when we came back there was so little left. the odd crawfish when there used to be one near every rock. you used to see the shadows of huge carp swiming around this little bay, 3 or 4 at a time, but i didn't see one the last time i was there. there used to be garter's and watersnakes (unfortunately this was before i really got into reptiles) and frogs and turtles all over the place, and now you're lucky if you see a handful in the period of a week. it's such a shame.
