brodie, that first one is intense! what is the common name of that species? am i correct in thinking that it is a dwarf?
Whites monitor.
Yes it is a small species, usually attaining no more than 60cm TL. Though, one of my males is close to 80.

Looking over posts again, have got to agree with bistrobob85, those are amazing creatures crocdoc, as well as excellent photos! Wow! Oh yeah, well as our Nile we also have recently "rescued" from a pet store a little baby Water monitor, have to borrow a camera before I can get any pics. Till then, I hope more people keep adding to this post/thread, these are the reads that are most enjoyable!

Thanks!
I think their temperament is great, but they are very food focused and have a wicked feeding response. I feed them rats, mice, chicks and kangaroo meat (with vitamins and calcium as per SDZ turkey diet, replacing the turkey with 'roo).
They are native to eastern Australia and my animals are descendants of Sydney locale stock. They are usually quite pretty in this area, but they don't all look like Alex.

Thank-you Invictus. :)
red dragon/invictus, cool dumerals!
if you don't mind, may I suggest using some leaf litter instead of the news paper? monitors love to hide in stuff like leafs etc.. Dirt is great too, if you can supply it.. Otherwise, leaf litter would be very benificial to your new addition!! You should refer to Brian/Asphyxia's dumerals setup, its pretty awesome.

I'm with V.hb, RedDragon. If you are serious about breedind dumerils, you're going to have to get them set up on something they can nest in (like leaf litter). You needn't wait two years, either, unless the female is a hatchling (which is unlikely, for if it were you wouldn't know it's a female).

Crocdoc & V.hb - No worries there, they were only on newspaper long enough for us to watch for parasites and such. I have picked up a heaping ton of peat moss, and am working on building them a more suitable enclosure as well. Thanks for the advice though. :)

And my biggest male!
Bought them feb 2003 as a couple, the male grew enormously but the female didn't grow at all. At this time I suspect "she" is also a male. Seperate them for half a year ago and the little one grows and eats like she should.

weird, I posted this earlier but the post disappeared.
bistrobob, my adults are from Sydney locale stock. Some of the wild lace monitors around here are the prettiest I have seen (if you are into the 'normal' patterned ones as I am, as opposed to bells phase). There are also some nice ones in the Noosa area, in Southern Queensland.

Varanus salvator togianus. (Togian Water Monitors)....what do you think of them? I really love their banding in the jaw/neck/throat area, similar to that of lace monitors(like dave's up above). They are a bit on the skinny side, but nothing that I can't correct with proper temps/humidity/food. Cheers everyone...

nice animals.
I have got to wonder who the hell was responsible for naming V. melinus as a tree monitor, as they are clearly not. In fact, they are more aquatic I'd presume than arobreal..Yes, they may climb every now and then, but so do savanahs, and other big, bulky, terrestrial monitors... I just think the name is misleading, and they do not possess any of the tree-dwelling characteristics that members of the prasinus complex do, or any that V. salvadorii do..
In my experience with melinus, they spend 95% of the time buried under leaf matter... very shy and elusive, and by no means arboreal...
Beautiful animals nonetheless.. best of luck to you with them...
