Hi all! My name is Shawn, I just turned 15, and I live in Sherbrooke, alomost and hour and a half from MTL. I don't have any herp at the moment because my mom doesn't want to.. I've tried speaking to her and asking why I can't, but she didn't gave me any reason, it was just "I said no, don't ask anymore".. The worst is that I have a job, and I could pay for it, my mom wouldn't have to pay anything, but hey! I'll be waiting! Anyway, does anyone have any tips to convince a mother? I guess this question comes very often on the board! Oh and, my apologizes for my english, I hope you can all understand..:)

Hi Shawn and welcome to the best herp family on the net. ;)
Your english is great, much better than my french. lol. I have family out your way, in Sherbrooke, Bromont and Waterloo, on my hubbies side. We were just there last week end. I live in eastern Ontario but I lived in Quebec for a few years when I was really young. Beautiful country side. I got some awesome pictures of the mountans when we were there last time.
As for advice for your mom to allow reptiles in her house, I'm not sure if there is any soundproof advice that will work for that. Most times it is because of a fear that parents don't want the animal. My husband is terrified of snakes, and I mean terrified! But I have 6 in the house and he is alright with it because he knows they are locked up tigh and he is always aware of them when they are coming out to be played with so he can leave the room or house.
Maybe your mom is just afraid and educating her on the specific reptile you want will help. Try printing stuff out and giving her some facts. show her how responsible you can be with it. And often compromises help as well. I compromised with my husband for blue tongue skinks instead of snakes about a year ago and this year he gave in (without my begging lol) on my snakes.
Good luck with it.
Welcome to ssnakess, Shawn. What kind of herp do you want? Perhaps your mum will be ok with a turtle or a leopard gecko as opposed to a snake. Besides what Deb has suggested, you could also take her to a pet store to look at the herps there and see what she is ok with and what she is not. Do a search on ssnakess, I remember seeing a few threads discussing this topic.
