Hello all! I am new to this forum, but have been interested in wildlife for some time. I was able to find these snakes and was wondering if anyone would please I.D. them. I found them about 20 miles inland from the S.E. Georgia coast in open areas flanked by heavy woods and rivers. Thanks!

Here are the links to the pictures:

The reddish one's a garter (Thamnophis sirtalis maybe?). They aren't normally coloured like that and I don't have a field guide on hand so I can't be sure what species. The other is an immature yellow ratsnake (Pantherophis [formerly Elaphe] obsoleta quadra something), again I don't have my field guid so sorry I can't give you the ssp name, hopefully someone more informed will get to this thread soon.

Looks like Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis and a Pantherophis alleganiensis (formerly known as P. obsoletus quadrivittatus) to me.

I would say Thamnophis sirtalis marcianus, red sided garter.

?! Never heard of that one but I've heard of T. marcianus, the checkered garter. :D

I tried looking for Pantherophis alleganiensis on google put didn't find it. When was the name changed? What did they do with the everglades ratsnake? Do you have a link?

Thank You

Yes, I got them from the wild, but released them where I got them once I photographed them.

Pantherophis alleganiensis. The name was changed just recently. The glades rat is the same thing as the yellow rat, just a colour variant.

Is that pronounced al-i-gan-yen-sis?

Sort of, I guess. I only read it of a Reptiles issue.

OK this name changing thing is annoying.
