Recently my g/f bought a pair of house geckos because of my love of lizards i guess it grew to her and she was curious. She wanted a pair of leos but the pet store sold their last 2 and she then saw the pair of house geckos and fell in love. The one had a black foot that later fell off, but today the other one was being held and as she put it back it put its foot in its mouth and wouldnt move. She finally misted him w/ water and he let go and went on with his daily routine, any ideas why it did this?

wait, im confused. which of the following occured?
1) gecko with missing foot bit his own remaining foot
2) he bit the stump
3) he bit the other gecko
4) he bit the disembodied foot
if he bit the other gecko, i would say separate them, although i have always thought it was fine to keep house geckos together. if he bit himself on the stump, its probably just some natural reaction like "where the hell's my foot". if he bit himself on the good foot, its possible that this is a warning of something gone wrong. if he bit the disembodied, you should take it away.
what you should be concerned about: why did he lose the foot? it may be worthwhile for you to take him to the vet.
I agree with you, and I know this is a serious topic, but your senarios made me giggle...
I agree that the gecko, no matter what happened, should be taken to a vet... I do this routinely, even when the animals appear fine... just so I know what their state of health is...
Let us know what happened to your little guy, and I wish the both of you the best of luck!

DO NOT HANDLE THE GECKOS
House geckos are very small, and have a little to no stress thresh hold. I have two males in the same cage, and they are doing great, both are gaining weight and feed regularly. Housies are like anoles and poison dart frogs, JUST TO LOOK AT!

Sorry I wrote that in a rush yesterday let me clarify.
The gecko that had all 4 feet bit onto his back foot.
The first gecko we got that lost the foot we took to the pet store since it was the same day we noticed his foot and she said it had to be the one that the anole grabbed ahold of thats why she seperated the anoles from the house geckos.
As far as the vet goes I called and he said it'd be virtually pointless to bring him in if the pet store owner saw it happen but he then questioned why she would sell it. Either way pet stores and vets around this area are the same as regular doctors around here. Pointless, and wrong 90% of the time when I bring my Sav for his check up in a week I'll bring along the gecko
Thanks for your replies sorry I wasnt more clear.

Another question I have is you said you have to males living in the same tanks. I can't find more then 3, or 4 iffy articles about these little guys let alone one good one. So if you could help me out there so I can help her learn everything she needs to know about these little guys and also how do you determine the sex?

so, now that i know the situation: if you know why the foot fell off (anole bite), then you dont need to take it to the vet, just make sure the stump is healing, and if the wound is open, apply polysporine. oh, and make sure you arent using a substrate that can get stuck to it. as for the other one, i think he was just being weird. if it becomes a chronic activity, then worry.
