I am a monitor guy all the way!

I own 0.1.2 Savanna Monitors!

The female is about 2 1/2ft long and tame as can be! She is a great eater too! She takes mice, rats, uncooked and cooked chicken and hamburgher meat, eggs, and insects!

Now the two babies are not that great of eaters:( I think I may have to raise their temperatures alittle bit.

I have also been scamming through the other threads in the Varanid section! I read that they LOVE to dig...which I knew...but last time I used dirt for a cage...it was HORRIBLE! It dried out and was a pain to clean out! Any suggestions to keep it easier?

Also please post your pictures of your Savanna Monitors! I will post mine later!

I am also thinking about getting another monitor. Possibly a Black Throat, Water, or a Nile. I am looking for something more along the lines of a long snout instead of something stout like the Savanna Monitor, but the Black Throat is still in play because they are just AWESOME! I want something large and SEMI tame. But the Niles are just so fascinating to me I cannot control the desire to own one! I would probably get an Ornate, since they tend to stay smaller.

Your opinion would be greatly appreciated! Thanks much!

Thanks,

Don Meyer

PS - I also own a Green Iguana and a Leopard Gecko.

I'd nix on the ornate if size is an issue, as ornates don't stay smaller.

Hi,
I agree with DK on this - they can become 6 feet - and for the baby savannahs, I would offer them more insects for now, w/supplement calcium and phosphates....they need alot of calcium in their younger years of growing up....and clean water of course to wash it down with.

A white throat is a bottomless garbage can and will eat you out of house/home, not to mention can reach 6 feet, 40 pounds and sh$t 3 quarts at you on a bad mood day!

cheers,

Eh...good points Mark and Croc.

I'm thinking my Savs are good for now.

I think my next monitor will be a dwarf.

THen later a Blackthroat maybe.

Thanks!

Yes, albigs are walking trashcans. My blackthroat at around 2 1/2 feet and growin fast will eat 4 mice, 20 crickets,2 crawdads and beg for food. These critters are bottomless and strong. Fluffy has tore down his logs (held up with 2 inch wood screws) to get to mice and crickets that found a place to hide.
But by god they are beautiful.

My blackthroats eat around 5lbs of food every week. I try to feed them as many whole prey items as possible. I think it helps them distinguish between food and my hand. Have any of you ever kept an Albig that hit 40lbs? I think my male will hit 6' but I cannot see him 40 lbs.
