I used sand at first with no problems for months on my leo's, but I switched to papertowels for health and cost. I have noticed that my leo's stink more on papertowels than sand. I told the guy at the petstore ( who breeds and raises leo's) about it and he said sand absorbs smells, and that he has the same problems. I change the cages once a week, or should I change them twice aweek? The smell is real bad and my G- friend is starting to complain.

Well, if they bother you, I say change em more often, but one thing you can do is just keep a small open box of baking soda near the enclosure (not in it) that will help absorb any ambient odors in the room, and will hopefully cut down on the smell bothering your girlfriend. Just change the box each month and it should help a lot. Its super cheap, and very effective! I use it to deal with the ambient cat box odor in my office, and it works like a charm.

Good luck-

Same here. I change the paper towels pretty much every day and do a disinfecting cleaning once a week. I would rather spend the extra time cleaning than worry about the possible implications of using sand as my substrate. :D

Dirty paper towels + being lazy and not changing them = bad odor and unhealthy conditions for a reptile.......

Well, grrrrrrrrr....... Cleaning cages once a week does not = being lazy at all.

LOL, you stated that you change the paper towels almost every day (as I do) and do a more detailed cleaning once a week (which I also do) which is absolutly fine..... I am talking about people that hardly even change the paper towels for example: only once a week.......

Well greg I am not lazy....... I just started using papertowels so wasn't sure how often to change them...... " But now I know, and Knowing is Half the Battle" The one I had the worst problem with odor was the one I am housing 3 leo's so they needed to be changed more often than the single leo's. If I was lazy I wouldn't have 6 leo's, 1 scorpion, and 7 tarantulas.
