Anyone have any ideas how to convince my parents to let me get a snake?? lol, I'm desperate. I want to get a BP so badly, but my mom is SO scared of anything living (except humans and *some* dogs)! I can care for it, and my dad is cool with it. But it's just my mom... when I come back from the Expo, I say to her that I touched a snake and then I tap her shoulder, and I swear that she was almost ready to ground me. :(

Well if your mom truly has a fear of snakes then maybe its not a good idea.
I know that soem ppl are say "hell no, no snakes for you" but then again some mean it cause they are scared and dont know why.
If its just a "mom" thing then just bring it home set it up in your room, by the time she notices its there you can be like "heck I have already had it for 2 months with no probs" lol.

lol. I've thought of that... maybe it'll work. If not, I'll sell it to someone here :P
That would be quite irresponsible and needlessly stressful to the poor snake. I'd say talk it over with both your parents and try to come up with a compromise that you can both live with. Just my opinion. Good luck!!

Yea I was kidding on the whole just get it thing. IMO if my mom was really against me getting one and I lived with her I would not get it as its her house and I would hate to do anything that made my parents feel uncomfortable in there own house.
you might try this trick, it worked for me, my mother was quite against snakes in our house, but she was an uneducated individual in the world of reptiles, so i snuck in a lil kenyan sand boa, and never told her...i mean it's small, it stays small, it lives in a small cage, and a month later i cam home from work to find...my mother playing with the lil thing after she found it!!!! She didn't know that snakes could be so beautiful and some quite peaceful! it broke the Ice quite nicely, and since, my snake collection has grown...point is, most people dont know that much about snakes, my suggestion, go out an buy a book, showing the different types of snakes out there, and take ur mom out for coffee (lil bribeing never hurt) and explain to her/educate her on these wonderful animals...who knows she might see somthing in the book she likes?

ACk- Kimos mom must be cool as hell, because if I snuck a snake into my house then she would have freaked and probably KILLED it, if not dumped it outside, when she found it.
KIMO!! Stop telling the young people to disobey their folks! Thats a risky thing to advise!
My suggestion is that you learn all you can learn right now, and simply discuss it with them regularly. Dont push it too much though. Maybe take your mom with you to the pet store, and ask the employees to take some snakes out to show you, and so your mom can see them being handled. While you are their, you can tell her about the snakes you see. Hopefully regular trips of doing that, in addition to seeing your interest in what is definitely an educational hobby, she might surpise you and change her mind.
Ultimately, if she doesnt, you should respect her wishes. If you arent paying rent, then really it would be VERY disrespectful to bring animals into the house that you KNOW she wouldnt want their, and that is not only not likely to work, but may earn you some consequences, too.
It takes time to show people who are reluctant and afraid that its not really so scary- I worked on my husband for 3 months before he finally agreed, but he did eventually conceed, and he is learning to like my snake, slowly but surely. I wish you the best of luck. If she still says no, you wont live their forever, so sooner or later, you will get your snake =)

LOL!
I'll see if there's any possible way that I might be able to convince her. I'll talk to my dad too and see if he can try.
Thanks,
Im all for the get the snake then tell your parents. Thats what I did, but I did whilei was at school, and i wouldn't have moved home for the summer if she wouldn't let me bring my two home with me.
Surprisingly enough now she is freaked out over the idea of rats in the freezer. She even freaked out at dinner cause she though pasta shells looked like rat faces.....hahahaha, it was hillarious.
My advice for you is just tell her that one of your friends got it, couldn't take care of it properly and you took it cause you would rather see it live a happy life then a neglected one. Moms love the i love animals to much to see them suffer card.

ive heard some cases that a kid bought a snake parents didnt know about it until a month later, then i kid told them everything they knew about the snake and how there really not that dangerous. But im not saying you should do this but maybe you can try to educate your mom and tell her that there not that scary. My mom doesnt like snakes cause shes afarid that it will get out, so i have to make sure that they wont and tell her how they wont get out. Try educating your mother

i wish you luck. my mum appears to be losing her mind, and every time she does respond with some sort of reasoning it's different every time. so i'm just waiting. i'll get my first herp eventually. but then i'm working at a pet store so i can get my reptile fix there every few days.
if your mom is likely to be reasonable and hear you out then i definately recomend taking her to a pet store (perhaps scope it out first and talk with the people working there, ask them when a good time would be to come in and what you wanna get across to your mom. i don't know about others, but i know i'd be willing to talk to her and such. i love getting a bit of a crowd around me of fascinate adults and children) and trying to get her a bit of exposure to them. if she isn't willing to even discuss the idea and you don't think she'd have the heart to harm the snake then i'd just sneak one in if you have the opportunity.

If you know some one that lives near you you could have them bring a snake over and aclimate your family to a snake. DO YOUR RESEARCH! If you can prove to your poarents you klnow what your doing, and know about the species, there is a better chance of aquiring a snake. AND try to convince them to go to a herp show, thats how i got my first bp.

I have been doing research for the past year, and I know how to take care of just about any snake out there. I just need to convince my mom. Maybe I'll see if they have any shows out here where she can learn that snakes aren't disgusting...
Who knows, maybe it'll work.

Just a little tip if you do finally get a snake with her reluctant blessings.
Let her see it regularly, even if just a glimpse. Because if she goes 6 months without seeing it and it's doubled in size, her paranoia/phobia about it turning into a giant man-eating monster animal may get the better of her. If she doesn't really notice it growing in size it will make it easier on her (and you) in the long run, until she gets used to the idea of a snake in the house.
I was never one to listen to my mother, and she told me I could never have a snake. I got a snake anyways, but my mom was by no means terrified of snakes. I knew my mom wouldn't do anything once it was already here because that's the way she is. I'm not necessarily condoning going against your parents, but sometimes it can be ok to.
If educating her doesn't work and she is *truly* phobic of snakes, you need to respect that.

If you mom is phobic of snakes i wouldnt sneak one in, this can cause problems. I would suggest maybe get another type of reptiles and not get a snake, maybe when you mov eout?
