question about substrate

i am using a substrate called t-rex forest bedding,
And i am just wondering how thick to have it because i dont want my geckos to burn them selfs on the heat mat if they dig, because the heat mat is hot even though it is on the outside of the glass,

if its taht hot you think it might burn them then it might be to hot in general. You should be aiming at a hot spot of around 90 for leopards so try raising the tank by placing something under each corner and it might cool it down and get it to 90.

Are you using an accurate thermometre?

I used to use the same bedding for my leo's. It works well to conduct heat make sure it's dry. A half inch layer to a cm is okay.
