Eating me out of house & home

Hello, I am new to the forum. I have an 8 yr. Old Dumerils Boa 7 ½’ & 6 ½” in girth whom is my best friend. He is concerning me lately though. I use to feed him 1 jumbo rat a week now he is up to 2 a week and anytime you go near his home he looks at you like he is going to eat you! I can’t even go into give him water with out being on my toes. Should I be feeding him something different? He is eating the biggest rats I ever seen. Maybe time for rabbits? I am by no means rich (he must think I am) but $15 a week for him is a lot. I can’t bread my own for smell reasons. Help a guy out here. And if I am to change his diet are there any tricks you can enlighten me on?

Welcome to sSnakeSs.com! You can definitely move your guy up to rabbits I am sure. Some snakes are just always in the same mode as you described however, regardless of amount fed. An adequately fed snakes can still be a ravenous monster to deal with... I know quite a few of my boas will surely take my arm if I stick it in their cage to grab a water dish :flick: Check out your local co-op, they may be able to help you locate a rabbit breeder (don't waste your time with pet stores, they are way overpriced) or you can also try livestock auctions for really good deals on them. I'm not sure what feeder businesses sell rabbits online, but you should be able to easily secure a local place for them :)

Linds, I will need the same source some day. You mentioned the co-op, for what reason would someone be breeding rabbits?

many people breed rabbits for human comsumption.. Try talking to local farmers, if they themselves don't breed rabbits, im sure they know someone that does, it's usually cheaper this way..

It shouldn't be to hard to find a rabbit breeder, specially in Arizona. Rabbit was on the menu at the chow hall once a week when I was in Yuma.

There are plenty of breeders of the Californian and New Zealand, which are common "meat" rabbits. From experience, I would NOT say you are going to use them for "snake food," as some people can get a little upset. But for some weird reason it's fine to say that they are going to be used for "human" food. LOL! An auction is a great place to get rabbits, but I think there are several feeder breeders in the US that carry rabbits too.
