More locals..

I know... nothing earth shattering... Just thought some might like to see what hatchling southern black racers look like. Here's two out of a clutch of a dozen.

Congrats Mark, they're cute little squirmers. I always had a terrible time getting hatchling black racers to eat pinks (and of course up here, we don't have the free supply of anoles). What do you usually start them off on?

They love brown anoles. This time of year I can get just about any size just by walking out the door. They'll eat skinks and green anoles too of course. I seldom try pinks since what they want is so easily available. They seem to key in on rapid movements and since pinks rarely move fast (ha!) they don't become interested. These really are locals, the parents were found in my yard, ( I found the male when I was washing rubbermaids and he chased an anole out from under my shed) so I end up releasing them right here normally. I just like to document the hatchlings and take pics.

That's about what I figured. The ones I've had were locals too. People who collected the eggs, thinking they were turtles, and then passed the hatchlings on to me when they weren't. I always let them go near where the eggs were found after they refused to eat pinks in the first couple weeks or so. I tried crickets and guppies also, since they had more movement. Guppies nearly worked- the racers were definitely attracted to the flopping. The skinks around here are a lot more wary than brown anoles and don't congregate for easy catching in quantity.

NEATO!! Cute lil squirmers!! They're juvenile coloration is so amazing!! Pity they don't stay that way. I'd bet they'd be much sought after if they did.
