View Full Version : breeding/incubating cerastes
My female cerastes is showing signs she may be gravid. Does anyone have any experience incubating the eggs? I'm going to throw a nest box with some damp sphagnum in with her tomorrow and keep a close eye on her. Any suggestions or insights would be welcome.
Thanks.

Unless I'm very confused, Cerastes are viviparous?

I believe Cerastes cerastes are egg layers Ray...
The link in the above post actually has a pic of them hatching if you need the visual evidence.

According to Spawls & Branch, "The Dangerous Snakes of Africa", C. vipera lays eggs which hatch within hours of being laid. I guess that makes them ovoviviparous.

Some general stuff ....
Cerastes cerastes tend to reproduce after hibernation period of 2/3 months (10-15C°).
Placing the animals together in spring should result in copulation ...
2/3 months later 5-14 eggs can be deposited.
Incubation temp 28C° - 40 > 60days
First shed after 7-15 days, some will eat pinkies straight away others only lizards ...
force feeding may be needed.
