View Full Version : corn babies, not following the odds...
Ok,, first year breeding our corns, so I don't know what they are HET for or if they are HET for anything. The 2 were purchased in a pet store and at that time I never asked questions about genetics.
I bred our Amel male to our female Anery. She laid 22 eggs, 20 good ones.
They started hatching this week, the 2 first to come out were 1 anery and 1 normal.
So I figured that my male must be HET for Anery. cool !
But now they're all out and we have 17 anerys and 3 regulars... this is not following normal odds...
I have a couple of theories...
1) We were lucky..
2) Some babies are too dark for us to see that they are regulars and they simply look like anerys for now but after the 1st shed some colors will show up, but i doubt that
3) There's a 3rd gene that is present in the male and in the female i.e. Anery B.. so both would be HET for Anery B wich would explain that we got so many anerys..
What do you think ?

Interesting results - first congrats on the hatchlings! Odds are just chances, so your first option could still be the case - in an anery to amel het anery, every hatchling has a 50% chance of being either anery or normal, so it's like flipping a coin, need hundreds of times before you get half and half - even though with 20 babies you would expect closer to the normal split.
The possibility of both being het for charcoal would increase if you got them both at the same time from the same store and it was possible they were siblings. Not sure how common charcoal is in your area, but here, true charcoals are much less frequent than regular anerys - so odds of two, unrelated snakes both being het charcoal would be much lower than the odds of getting a weird ratio in a hatch of 20 eggs. Could test it out by breeding your amel to a blizzard though - would get great results if he was het charcoal!
Will be interested to see photos of these guys, especially if they develop reds over time and turn out to be normals. Doubt this is the case though - usually anery and normal are pretty distinct even before first shed.
Congrats again and please post pics -

I once went to the casinos in AC and went to the roulette wheel. Odds are that red or black will come up 49% of the time. I played red 12 straight spins and it came up black every time. I lost all of my gambling money in a matter of minutes "playing the odds". On every particular spin, the odds are the same, just as with each snake, the odds are the same. Next year you may have 17 normals and 3 anerys. Good luck with the babies. Post a pic when you get a chance.

Just for the fun of it (for those who think stats are fun) I ran the chances of getting 3/20 when you are expecting 10/20 - only produced that combo once in 1000 tries, seven times in 10,000. Much lower chance than I would have thought - but like tai pan says - it can happen!

xyz, ;-)
the babies are really nice. And let us know the total count in the end, I would like to know how far up your bottoms the horse shoe is!! ;-) joking.
Nice~~
well Rene,
your first lesson in breeding corns.
NEVER PLAY WITH MURPHY'S LAW!
In my opinion, you got real lucky.
From what I think the odds for you is that the amel is het anery
so basically
amel het anery x anery = anery het amel and normal het snows. But since most came up with anerys I would say that you really got lucky with that one.
But of course I wouldn't be so sure until some of them sheds. I have seen many snow looking corns becoming regular looking amels later on in life after shedding a couple of times.....
I have had a clutch of 22 hatachlings this year.
The parents were
miami x normal (both het for snow)
Now according to murphy's law, it should be
25% normal het snow
12.5% amel het anery
12.5% anery het amel
12.5% normal het amel
12.5% normal het anery
6.25% snow
6.25% amel
6.25% anery
6.25% normal
BUT! My results
7 normals
1 amel
12 anerys
2 snows
lol....what odd numbers..if you ask me this year's anerys genes are ruling!! LOL
Good luck with the babies and start posting some pictures man!!
Simon, I did post pics, but in other threads :)
Here they are again ;)
As for the colors changing,, I looked at them very carefully yesterday with a friend who helped with the sexing.. and the anerys are really really anerys :) We didn't see anything that might look like any type of coloration anywhere.
We'll wait after 1 or 2 sheds, but I think 2004 is the anery gene year ;)

Not too relevant but he's my ration for a similar pair this year:
I also bred two double het Snows together this year and got this ratio....
20 Normals
4 Anerys
2 Amels - one Amels is pretty light and I thought it might be a snow but now I think he's just a nice, light Albino. He's too orange and not pink enough to be a Snow.
I have another 18 eggs form this pair incubating right now. We'll see how the odds work next time. :)
Last year, breeding the same dbl het female to a het Anery male, I got almost 50% Anerys over two clutches.
LOL
well a couple of clutches hatched again~
and it was suppose to be around 50% anery and 50% ghosts....but...the stupid thing was....that out of 20.....5 were ghosts and the rest were anerys....and one of the ghosts was DIE (Dead in Egg).....sigh~~
But yeah...luck is always changing with the corn genes..but that is part of the fun of it~~
I love working with corns since they always give me surprises~~
WYZ- Are the three photos above all of snakes from this clutch you are talking about? Because the top one is amel, not normal. I am sure you know this but you didnt mention any amels in the clutch, only normals and anery.
The middle anery is awesome!

These are from 2 clutchs.
I got: amel and double HETs in the first and anery and double HETs in the 2nd.
My favorites are really the anerys... and I'm lucky I got plenty of anery babies :)

Very cool. Sound as anery heavy as my last clutch. It is the year of the anery!
Cheers,
