My first herps were WC frogs and toads, WC garters and a firebelly newt. I had all those when I was 10-14 years old. :)

Hey , Mine was a ball python, I still have her as well I found a guy who was selling 5 snakes (1.0.1 burms, and 2.1 balls) and I went too see them thinking of getting a baby burm, but when I arrived I decided too go with an adult female ball, after seeing his adult burm. Thought it would be better too start small,

Devon

Edit: I miss read my first Herp was a pair of RES , I've had them since I was 5, My first snake was my ball python.

Well the most affordable first herp was an anole, fun little critters they were :). From that one anole sprouted a load of herps: 1.5 leos, 0.1 bd, 1.0 fire skink, 1.0 savannah 0.0.1 nile, 0.0.1 ksb, 0.0.1 frog eyed gecko, 0.2 cornsnakes, 0.1 ball python, 0.0.1 burm, 0.2 green tree frog, and an asian forest scorpion. (all of which was sold wen i left the hobby for a year, but back in da hobby again and starting a new collection..so far it's just 0.0.1 cali king, 0.0.1 atb and soon to be 1.1 atb, 0.1 IJCP, 0.1 ETB) :) Have a gudd wun :)

Hmm.... my first herp... When I was younger my father and brother went fishing and my brother came back and told me about the turtles from the pond. Feeling left out, I had my dad take me the next day and we searched for turtles but could never catch them. I was so devestated that I couldn't catch one I went home in tears. To quiet me, dad and I went to pet stores looking for turtles, but at the time reptiles weren't popular in pet stores. I ended up getting a cat instead.

When I moved to New Mexico in 1987ish, I finally did get my turtle. I worked hard and earned the money for her doing household chores. I had my baby red-eared slider named Bo. (We thought she was a boy at first). I still have her at the age of 24 (I got her when I was 7 or 8) making her about 16 years old. I know turtles are long-lived but I hope my old girl will still be around for ages to come. She remains one of the most personable and interesting pets I have!

My very first was a red-eared slider when I was 8. I feel badly for the thing looking back, because upon the insistence of my father all I kept it in was a rubber tub in the basement with about an inch or two of water without any heating. He told me he had kept turtles the same way when he was young, and they had even laid eggs and hatched babies so who was I to argue? To this day I don't think he has much appreciation for the difference in species of reptiles. He did eat well and seemed healthy the whole time I had him though. One day, I was letting it walk around the yard and turned away for a minute, thinking it'd be too slow to get anywhere, but when I looked back it was gone!!! I found out years later that one of my neighbours had found it and brought it into the SPCA. Oh well, I hope the person it ended up with took better care of it than I did.

My first herp as a real herper (i.e. all the books, setup, supplies, live food, etc...) was an Argentinian Horned Frog.

WC turtles, snakes, frogs and toads starting when I was 4 or 5. I only ever kept them for a day or two and than let them go. I was just interested in watching them for a bit.

First purchased was a pair of green iguanas. I told my dad that I wanted one and he let me get two - lol. He didn't have a clue. Unfortuantely, they were both sick and infested with mites. I got the mites down, but they unfortunately parished soon after. I was way to little to care for them as adults though. Pretty nutty eh.

I caught my first snake when I was six. A baby northern water snake. Unfortunately for the snake I kept it in a jar of water and it drowned. I still feel bad about that and that was 40 odd years ago. Stupid kid! I've gotten much better now.

I caught all sorts of snakes, lizards, frogs, toads, salamanders, and turtles as a small child and kept some of them as pets (rough green snakes, eastern king snakes, eastern garters, snapping turtles, bullfrogs, fence swifts and race runners). I have no idea what the first one I kept was... My parents really hated me keeping snakes in the house though, because they always excaped what ever jury rigged container I tried to hide them in, and my father was terrified of them. My first purchased snake as an adult in college was a black rat snake.

A firebelly newt, I was about 12 yrs old or so. It escaped though, one of my younger siblings opened the cage and let it out or took it out to play with and let it loose, never did find it.

First snake was a corn snake, then on to Balls.

My first herp was a Pueblan Milk Snake. So of course, she was whippy, and musked a lot, but calmed down soon enough, and is now the sweetest little snake, and SO pretty.

I just couldn't resist her when I saw her one day at the pet store, so I researched everything I could find on milksnakes, and bought her!

my first was a small garter snake when i was 4.. my mom let it go at the cottage a few months later. when I was 6, i had a small turtle which passed away after a very short time with me.

from there, i didnt have anything for about 10 years. during that time, i'd catch snakes, but never kept any. my first real official herp after that was an armadillo lizard/skink/whatever.. it was $30 from petsmart. from there, i got a assortment of smaller lizards and eventually worked my way up to iggys and monitors. After a few years, i realized that iggy's weren't for me, so i adopted them out to good homes.

then about a year and a half ago, i met my current girlfriend who loved my leos and i got her hooked on herps. she got a ball, and shortly after I got a burm.. the rest is history with us moving in together and now our collection is of about 20 snakes and a savannah monitor.
