Future home for my JCP(s)

Well I asked for a few ideas on arboreal setups. And that helped. I have a 6 year old JCP that will be getting moved into this when it is done. It will have both belly and basking heat, overhead lighting and ventilation and a full view plexi front door. It is 48"x32"x24". Made from plexi (on the sides and back) and melamine on the top and bottom. Aluminum 1"x1" Angle for the main structure. Most is bolt together. It is on wheels and will have assorted arboreal goodies in it when done. Overall, it is coming in about 50% lighter then a traditional melamine enclosure. I will post the finished product when it is up and running. Hopefully by the end of next week

Very nice - the bolt together design is really neat. Is that 1 inch angle aluminum readily available? Do you have it just on the outside of joints or on inside too? Just sealed with silicone?

What thickness is the white plexi - it looks like what we used to buy as 'puck board' here - white, hard that goes around arenas. Just a regular bit for drilling through?

I assume the melamine is to give stability - so it doesn't warp from corner to corner. How did you do the joint between the clear and white plexi on the side with the top window?

Now that I look again - how do you get into it? Doors, vents?? I know they must be there but I can't see where?

Looks like a great way to reduce weight, avoid painting and give a water resistant finish.

Mary: The angle is in fact 1" and I got it at Rona warehouse, but it should be easy to get, and yes everything was bolt together, with a few spots that were screwed together. The thickness of the plexi is 1/4' for all that you see is white. The clear section is a little thinner. I used the melamine for the top and bottom , only cause I had it lying around and I knew I was gonna be cutting holes for basking lights, heat pads and overhead lighting. Venting still to be installed.

How you get into it is easy..;) What you don't see at this time, is the large plexi door that will be hinged and latched. That is on the schedule for this weekend. I will shoot a bunch of detail shots and put them in my gallery when done. There is still lots to do. This is the first one I have put together where I didn't really have a set plan, this has been all on the fly. It was more an exercise in getting rid of stuff in the basement.;)

Bruce, it is a tough call as a major cost in this build is the plexi, I had three suitable pieces hanging aorund the store with no intended use, I figure if building from scratch you would likely put out around 300.00 for everything (materials, heat pads, etc..) this is a long term enclosure, so I don't mind spending the bucks.
I will be building another for the Coastal Carpets in the future.
Identical to this one. I will do a cost summary when I build that one. Likely in a couple of months.

All that's left to do, is fine tune the temps and it is ready to go. And as expected this unit is much lighter.
