View Full Version : Scale counting questions determining bci vs bcc

If I did this right, I counted 257 ventral scales on my bci's shed.

to be sure I am using the correct terms, by ventral scales, I counted the larger scales on the underside ( belly ), from where they start past the head, down to the vent ( on the shed you can see where his spur's are, this is where I stopped ).

My questions:

1. Did I count right? ( meaning where I started and finished)
2. If I'm reading the chart right and understanding it ( http://home.att.net/~crinaustin/BoaGeneral.htm#Table2 )

just this scale count alone would prove him as BCI.....yes?

or do I need to do more counting?

If I need more counts, if I post pics can someone point to starts and finishes for other scale counts?

You started in the right spot and ended in the right spot. You could also count the dorsal blotches, ie sadles. BCI is 21 or more. Start at the first one and stop above the vent.

I don't think counting the dorsal markings is at ALL accurate. I have 3 BCI from the same litter, and they have anywhere from 12 to 17 dorsal markings. Besides which, not ONE of my 7 BCI have more than 17... which would make them all BCC, which is not the case.

Have you even counted their ventral scales? Maybe they are Colombian BCC. Then again they could be crosses to. I think my male may be a cross because of the number of saddles he has.

We have 21 exactly :)

I can 100% say mine is a Colombian BCI, yes????

By "dorsal markings" are you including tail saddles?

I counted dorsal markings including the one right above the vent because it was 1/4 over the vent, 3/4 towards the head.

Personally I didn't really have too much of a doubt, nor did I care. Just thought it would be neat to count, especially since I got an excellent shed to do it on :)
