Now, with the hockey season over, Euro Cup 2004 is approaching quickly! I just thought I would spark up a conversation and see if anyone else here enjoys the sport, in addition to what team they are rooting for. It should be a really good tournament, and lets hope the referring doesn't mimic that of the last World Cup.

Forza Italia! LOL!

If I start saying football, people may ask why I am calling it football when I am talking about soccer and whatnot, and thus, soccer makes my life easier :D.

Truly, I want Portugal to win, so that there is a chance that they play Italy. That would be a game to be remembered.

I'd rather watch a full scale version of foosball myself, but what would turn the giant rods that make the players spin around?

Watching soccer is like watching an oversized game of ping pong where no one ever scores. I say leave it for the little boys who's mother's think hockey is "too rough". lol!

anyways back to reality. england wont win, i want them to, but we have a **** squad and a bad manager. if portugal win i will be very suprised, they usually dont play well. italy wont win. chances are france. simply because i follow mostly british football, and they are alot of french players turning heads over here. i can see them dominating it. but what the hell, thats why i like football, because hockeys too rough. hahaha.

If Italy are to win, they need to stop the score a goal and defend strategy. They tried that last Euro and look what happened, France scored to tie and when Italy was playing for penalties France scored the winner. They have good talent but need a new strategy.

I think everybody is overlooking the other teams. Depending on which team shows up for the Netherlands (if they decide they what to play) they can be deadly.

And NO dissing Figo. He is absolutely amazing!

Hey who is Englands keeper now that Seaman has retired?
If you say Gibbon from Newcastle I will be so happy. That guy is amazing to watch! TB

I would not sweat it yet, once we see who wins this game between Spain and Russia, and the winners game after that, we can have a better understanding as to what Portugals chances are. Hopefully they will step it up a bit, I am really hoping for Portugal to advance. Greece's defense was solid, however I noticed that Portugal centralized their attack to the middle of the net. There were at least three good scoring chances had there been players to the right of the keeper. That was a beautiful goal by Ronaldo though, it is too bad that came in stoppage time, lol.

CDN-Cresties
06-12-04, 06:14 PM
Well no doubt that todays result sucked. Deco and Ronaldo should have started the game. The penalty was a bit unlucky, Ronaldo didnt even try to tackle him, their legs got tangled up.

As for Figo, he is the the star and national icon of Portuguese soccer, so I dont think there is a problem with relying on your star player. He played well but he didnt get the calls some time that he deserved.

Portugal will come out strong against Russia, theres no doubt about that. Spain will be a difficult match but Portugal can get the result they want.

Tony, don't give up on Portugal just yet. I am almost confident they are going to advance, and I am an Italian! LOL! Fact is, they came out slacking - it is their country, and thus there are certain expectations brought upon them. When they are down 1-0, even worse at 2-0, it is a mess of frustration and nothing gets done. Nonetheless, they know they will have to step it up a notch - I seriously think that game should have been Portugals. First off, the penalty kick was ridiculous, he was running behind him and their feet got tangled. Second, had Portugal not centralized their attack to the middle of the keeper, there were numerous perfectly executed crosses which time after time when unused, as there was nobody to the right of the goalie. Anyhow, I think they now see how concentrated they must be, and will take a win from Spain.

Now for tomorrow's game - Italy and Denmark, I am pretty confident in that outcome. Then again, from the way things have started, you never know...

Well today was an interesting day at Euro. Sweden played a great game and scored some amazing goals. The diving header from Larsson was incredible, he's a great striker and very dangerous in the air.

The Italy game was also an exciting game to watch. Both teams had chances to score but the keepers did well. The only negative thing about that game was Totti's challenge on the Danish player near the end of the match. It was a horrible tackle, IMO should have been a straight red card, he had no intention of playing the ball, he attempted to injure the player. Other than that, it was a great day of European football.

I think Portugal played a overall good game today - I really enjoyed watching the game. However, they really need to put Ronaldo on as a starter. I mean, the guy is amazing! His first two international games, and he scores once and delivers a beautiful pass. I knew Portugal would win, as I know they will beat Spain. My prediction is 3 - 1 in Portugals favour.

I was a little disappointed in the Spain game. Spain easily deserved the win, and were the better team for the game, but unfortunately Greece was able to squeeze in that unforunate goal. Only problem is, I do not think Spain will advance now. Portugal will beat them, and Greece will beat Russia, leaving them tied with four points. At that point Greece will likely have more goals, and thus they will advance with Portugal. That is what I think, at least. Needless to say, I was upset that Spain did not get the win.

Well, UEFA made the decision in regards to Totti's fate - he is suspended for three days. I personally think that is ridiculous; first of all, he was provoked by the Denmark player. You don't even get three days for a red card. Second of all, if Denmark can go back and file a complaint with video as proof, I suppose Italy can go file a complaint for the thousands of dives that Denmark made in that game. Grrrr....

I am a little upset that France at this point advances no matter what, I was really hoping they would get eliminated right away. And I am still upset at the Totti call, it is just ridiculous. Hey, why don't we go back and file a complaint from the World Cup, when italy was stripped of three goals, called offside, which with video revision are clearly onside.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? It doesnt matter if it was provoked or not, spitting in someones face doesnt belong in the game. Consider Totti lucky to only get 3 games, another player during champions league received an 8 game suspension for the same thing. Totti was also lucky not to get a red card for that brutal tackle at the end of the match. As for the dives, sadly enough it has become a part of the game and you cant say that none of the Italians dive, every team has a player who goes down way to easily.

Well done England and Croatia was unlucky not to win, the Frecnh forward knocked the ball down with his hand. Oh well, it should be interesting to see how the group ends up.

I agree with you, this is why I love soccer over other sports, there are rules and a certain range of conduct and all players gotta respect it. The players play the game not make the rules and get away with it. Like other sports I know where it gets more and more violent and rules get changed a bit at a time.

Italy lost again because they went into their defensive shell, they had the game under control until they made those subs. Your right, it shouldn't be a part of the game, but for some reason I still don't think it is right to go back with 'video evidence' and make a claim. Soccer has always been, if the referee does not see it, it did not happen - that was part of the game. Although Totti's tackle did look like a malicious one, I do not think he all out intended on taking the player out. The end of the game was nearing, they were not winning against a team in which they should have been dominating, he was frustrated. I think he made a move too late and just followed through with it.

As for the dives, sadly enough it has become a part of the game and you cant say that none of the Italians dive, every team has a player who goes down way to easily.

Yes, every team has a diver. However, not every team dives at every opportunity, and to that extent. My sister would cry less getting hit with equal force of some players that game, yet they nearly went into tears. And what upset me the most, is they faked a fall at crucial times to Italy, for example, during a scoring chance, or a likely opportunity to get something started. Again, in my opinion, soccer should remain that if the ref does not see it, it did not happen. I love the sport to death, however when I see instances like this, and people crying over being tapped in the shins while wearing shin pads, I sit there and laugh at how pathetic they are. Like I said, if Denmark can go back and file that complaint, why can't Italy do the same for the World Cup games when they were eliminated by Korea because the referee's rigged the game, and discounted several goals that with revision of the video clearly shows the player being onside. Aw well, that is in the past now.

I am glad Portugal advanced, I am a little disappointed that Greece went through rather then Spain, but such is life.

Ugh, England's done...

They need to run 'Becks' outta town(or country). Good thing he's not at Man U anymore, they'd tear him to pieces.

A lot of people out there have been saying he's THE most over-rated player in the world. Gotta agree here. He's blown 3 penalty kicks recently(I think Turkey(?), France, and now Portugal). Can't have that from your top player, especially from the guy who takes all your kicks.

I'm starting to feel England is the most over-rated of the "top" teams period. They always seem to make early exits - recently anyways...

I always like to see the home side do well, so at least it was Portugal that did it...

OH MAN, what a game, Portugal deserved to win but England showed a lot of Heart. VIVA PORTUGAL!!!

How do you figure that? I think it was an extremely close game, and if anything, England deserved to win. Although, in the latter part of the game, Portugal did step it up a bit.

I'm starting to feel England is the most over-rated of the "top" teams period. They always seem to make early exits - recently anyways...

I will almost agree with you about Beckham, however England as a whole? I don't think so... They played amazing in their prior matches, and they stood their ground and almost won against Portugal, which nonetheless is a good team.

I am thrilled that France is out, though. And the Italy game - what can I say? I had checked live at UEFA and Denmark was leading 2-1. All of a sudden, Italy scores a beautiful goal and win the game. Here I am thinking Denmark had the game, then Sweden tied it up. It is unforunate that we did not get that penalty shot that Cassano clearly deserved. It is also unforunate that a penalty shot was awarded to Bulgaria when they both committed a foul. I find it kind of weird that before the game, it was rumoured that Denmark and Sweden would intentially tie the game. A little disappointed, understandably, and oddly enough I am now hoping for Portugal to win. Oddly enough, I have called the outcome of every game so far, aside from the Denmark - Sweden match, and something tells me Portugal will lose their next match.

*sigh* Another disappointing soccer competition.

I would love to see Portugal play Greece again but I think that Czechs will beat the Greeks 4-0 but you can never can tell in soccer :)

Well, its official, the match that opened Euro will be the match that ends it. It should be a good match but I believe that Portugal will win it.

What a goal! With no time left. Greece got out played for most of the match but had the better chances in extra time. Truly amazing!

EVERYONE:

A well played and amazing game GREECE won and up till now I believe more on luck, but this final game showed they have the skill to continue more Euro Cups.

Congrats to GREECE.

Although it pains me to see PORTUGAL get so close and improve every game they were beat by the cinderella story and can only learn from this and try again at WORLD CUP.

Both teams played great through out, but there can only be 1 winner.

The game was amazing to watch and I was happy to see Greece win the cup (I'm half Greek :D)

Was very exciting!

When I heard what the odds were for Greece winning the cup, I sure wish I had bet a few bucks... The odds were 100 to 1!

Regardless, it was an awesome game to watch.

Well the run comes to a end. Portugal just didnt have any luck today. Well done to Greece for their defensive display.
