View Full Version : Species of Uro to Breed!
I'm planning to get a breeding pair, and wondering what species you'd suggest? I already have young malis and saharans, but have the opportunity to get adult ornates, moroccans, egyptians, or hardwickii.
What would you choose? I love them all, and plan on having some of everything eventually!!! :) But what species would be more desirable when I'm selling babies next year?
Thanks!

well, i know ornates are very nice looking, and kind of expensive, so if you were to breed you could probably make a decent amount of money from them.
never heard of moroccans
all i know about egyptians is that they get big, and look pretty nice, but not as nice at ornates
hardwickii's are also expensive, so again, if youre tryingt o make money i might go with those.
and im just going by the prices around me, i dont know if they are expensive/cheap in ottawa. good luck though

If you're trying to make money, stay out of breeding.
If you're breeding because of your love of a certain animal, and your desire to propagate that species, then you are doing it for the right reasons. Make sure you can humanely house EVERY SINGLE BABY for its whole life just in case they don't sell. Learn the ins and outs of shipping animals so that you don't have to limit your market. Once you have these bases covered, THEN worry about making money. :)
But for the sake of opinion, I would personally LOVE to see some Egyptian uros captive bred in Canada. They are the largest, and to my knowledge, NOBODY in Canada is working with them right now. (If someone is working with them, please tell me who so I can bug them endlessly about when they will have babies!)
LOL! If I wanted to make money, I don't think uros are the way to go, really... :) But they will ALWAYS be my favourite animal!!!
I just mostly want to know which ones will have the best chance of selling, so I won't end up with a pile of babies that no one wants. If people want ornates, I'd LOVE to have ornate babies, to reduce the load on the wild populations! So, I'm mostly just interested in what types people want. I don't think we have as great a need for more malis or saharans at this time as some other species.
I love them all, and hope to work with ornates, Egyptians, hardwickii and moroccan eventually, but I can only build the collection one species at a time! :)
Thanks to everyone who has and will post!
