hi,

one of my cresteds that was hatched in september is looking like an adult now. I read varying accounts of when I can accurately sex the animal and how. there are no hemipenal bulges and it is 10months old. does this mean female, or should I keep waiting to be sure.
I have read lately that 4-6 months is the sexable age. is this true? I have been comparing to the adult pair I bought recently to see what I can determine. I have read about the preanal pores, and can clearly see them on my male. the youngster in question has some evidence of pores, but very faint. I have read that females have the pores but they are much smaller.

any advice/input is always appreciated

if at ten months, there are no hemi bulges, then you are pretty safe to say that you do have a female. Males are hard to mistake with their packages.

i have heard it can take up to a year, so don't assume anything, yet.

I have the same question although my daughter's cresties are younger. Does someone have a picture? or can someone direct me to a site, that shows what i am looking for when sexing her cresties. We have some excellent care sheets but reading one and actually seeing the difference between the 2 would greatly help me to tell what it is exactly i am looking for. Thanks :)

Don't jump to conclusions based on age. I've heard of 10 month old animals developing a bulge.

The weight of the animal is more important in my opinion. If it's 20-25 grams and isn't showing a bulge, I'd say it's a female. Conversely, you should wait until 35 grams before breeding her.
