View Full Version : Build me a site?

I am somewhat unhappy that I found out my free site will soon have banners all over (after 60 days) and am now considering getting a site where I would have to actually pay (eek, gasp, lol)

What I am wondering is, what kind of costs are involved? I know very little about the net, but from what I understand the costs would include:

-design
-hosting
-domain

Thats all that I know of. I want a site where I can have plenty of pictures up, and something that I can be taught to modify or update myself. I also want it to be simple yet attractive.

Can anyone tell me how easy this would be to do if I were to have someone else build a site for me? Where is the best place to get hosting (speed, size, cost, ect...)

Thanks to anyone who can help,
Brent Strande

The best hosting site in the world is 1 and 1 Internet. I go through them, and their prics are insane. For $5.95/month USD, you can get 500 megs of space, domain included. I have the $20 package which includes 2 GIGS of space, 5 DOMAINS, and all kinds of other cool features. http://www.1and1.com

If you want someone to design it, send me a PM.

I've been using Ipowerweb for a little over a year and am quite happy. They're priced at 7.95 U.S.D./month and you get 800megs of space, etc.

Why not get hosting through sSnakeSs.com and support the site? :D

I use a Canadian company. Sibername in Ottawa has fantastic prices. $79CAD (you can pay monthly if you wish) gets you 1 year web hosting with 50 Meg of space which is plenty unless you've got a huge site. For a little more than that fee, you can increase your space considerably. Why you would need 8 million gigs of space is beyond me. Our site only uses a few megs right now.

Why you would need 8 million gigs of space is beyond me. Our site only uses a few megs and we don't even need 50 meg.

Websites which intend on having a medium to large sized image gallary will need much more then fifty megabytes.

Yes, when you are talking about a site the size of ssnakes.com or something, but for the average herp website, even with a lot of pics in a photo gallery, 800 MB is a lot of unused space that you are paying for. For example, on my computer I have a folder with + 2200 images and it is only 459 MB.

My main point is that the average hobbyist does not want to pay extra for something they're not even going to use. If you find you are running out of space, a good web host would let you increase your plan if you need to.

I have a reseller account through HTTPme.com. Great host but probably more than you want to spend since as I said it's a reseller account. I have 6GB space, 60GB transfer and can host 75 domains for $45/month.

Check out webhostingtalk.com and maybe you'll find something suitable. Just be sure to do a search on any host you are considering since there are a lot of dodgy ones out there who will try and screw you out of your money. And if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
