Beautiful snake!

I don't notice an appearance difference from a normal ball, maybe with the exception of the extra white in the pattern and the random black spots. Are these features what make it a granite?

Thanks for the compliments, all. :)

I can't take much credit though. I give full props to mother nature and Canon technology... they can make even the shot-iest "photographer" look good! :D lol

Daver676, I don't know if there is anything going with the whole "granite" look/gene. I just see people posting pics of their "granites" all the time and I thought, "why not mine?" :) I mostly like her for her rich black and the nice peachy blushing she has... and because she'a a snake. ;)

Tim, they are doing well. The female is up around 700g but the male is mouse eater (I know... I'm lazy ) He eats more often than most of my yearlings though. He's only about 350g.

Thanks, Kevin. :) Your girl is doing well...

We picked up a gravid female from Ghana earlier this year because she looks like a cross between a GHOST and PASTEL. We have high hopes that she will prove out to be genetic. Well she laid 6 eggs 5 of which were viable. All 5 hatched and out of the 5 we were blessed with a 1.4 ratio. They all look almost 100% identical to each other. They all have alot of Granite flecking, they all have varying amounts of BLUSHING like a Pastel does, and have bellies much like a pastel's. There is no doubt in my mind that they are genetic and with the supposed new "SUPER" granite that was produced this year (before anyone asks I have not seen pictures of it but have only heard a little about it) it brings very high hopes for these babies in the near future. Here are a couple pics of my favorite 2 females from the clutch. These all look like a BLACK Pastel with Granite patterning and pictures do them absolutely no justice. They are unbelievable looking in person.

Hey guys other than the obvious amount of flecking(small spots)
what makes a granite a granite? and also is it genetic or sparatic like the classic jungle ball?
I got one at the expo with lots of flecks, I really mean lots of flecks and is a baby. The poor thing is a little dehidrated but really think it will come through.
Please clear this up for me. Thanks Vince

Well Vince,

There are alot of Balls that have flecking on their sides but only a few have shown to be Genetic. The ones we hatched we are 100% sure they are genetic as is just about everyone else that sees them. They have a totally different look to them than any normal Ball python. they have coloration similar to a Cinnamon Pastel, They have Blushing like a Pastel or Cinnamon Pastel, they have Clear Bellies like Pastel's and Cinnamon's and just look completely different than an average Normal. The Flecking that is found on normals might very well be genetic to some degree as it is found alot but the proven genetic granites all have the characteristics such as I described mine have as well as the flecking on them. So far all Granites proven genetic have been dominant/co-dominant.

Here's what Ralphie has to say about Granites....

Now, that's not to say that all bp's with some flecking are Granites, but who knows? It's worth looking into. :)
