Well, it's that time of year again. Our air conditioner down at the Scales building was not working. We tried fixing it today, but I need to get some bearings or a bushing, maybe a new motor.

Anyways, my mother checked out the local hardware store. They had a wall mount air conditioner that was at the store before they bought it. They agreed to let mom have it for $250.

This is an amazing little unit. First, a bit of background.

I wanted to be able to set up my air conditioner on a thermostat, so it would come on and control at a certain temperature - for example 82 F.

Roy gave me the very good idea to get a relay, a 24 power supply and use a digital thermostat, much like central air is controlled.

I don't need to do that, because this new air conditioner has a digital control, and a remote control. Yes, a REMOTE CONTROL. Also a digital readout, pretty buttons, and red and green LED's!!!

I don't know why I'd need a remote, but as a guy this is something I am happy to have and show off.

The air conditioner also has a timer, so it will turn on or off at a certain time. I'm not sure if I can program this daily, but I may use a 120 volt timer to turn the unit on and off, not sure yet.

Also, the thing is very high on the efficiency scale. It says it cost $40 / month to run it continually at 8.7 c / kiliwatt hour.

It automatically runs on the low setting, unless the temperature starts to creep higher, then it uses the high setting. Once the temp is back down, it switches to the low setting automatically.

It will control at 55 F - and I don't see why it couldnt' be used for brumation. It would also work for nightly lows, if trying to cycle boids early.
