what would be the best, or most creative corn i could mate with my snow corn, as in, what trait male would cause the most varied or colorful hatchlings. i'm trying to learn this whole trait thing again, thanks for any help , comments , or advice.

You will get the most variety if you can find a normal corn that is het for snow (amel and anery) because breeding to that will produce normals, snows, amels and anerys.

Bred to snow will produce all snow.

Bred to amel will produce amels unless the amel is het for anery - then amel and snow.

Bred to anery will produce anery only unless the anery is het for snow - then get anery and snow.

There is a link to some genetic information on cranwill's site (see breeder directory here or he posts a lot) and there are also a couple genetic predictors that you can download (google search of Mick's cornsnake predictor) that will help with sorting through the genetics,

Not to confuse the issue but wouldn't the snow X anery het amel (or amel het anery) actually produce the same thing as snow X normal het snow? Everything else seems to agree with what I thought I knew about this stuff.

Mick's Cornsnake Progeny Predictor is a great little program, well worth the short download. It's text based and bone simple but you get simple answers to most basic genetics questions. I found that it helped me to understand how it all works as far as phenotypes as opposed to genotypes and the probability of producing a given trait.

D'OH!

Of course not, my mistake. What I meant was if the anery was het amel you would get anery, amel and snow offspring and not just anery and snow.... I think. lol! I'm not helping clear things up here am I?

Mousekilla - actually the anery het amel to snow will only give anery and snow because all the ones homozygous for amel that would be produced will also be homozygous for anery (all babies would have to be homozygous for anery from anery by snow) - so will therefore show as snows.

don't you just love genetics!!

It's amazing how complicated things can get with just two mutant genes. It's the kind of thing that gets more interesting as you gain knowledge about it too, always more to learn. I just wish I was better at math so I wouldn't have to rely on Mick's software so much, I could probably work it out eventually using the squares but never in my head. lol!
