what wattage of bulb would i need to provide a basking spot about 8 inches under the screen in a 20 gallon tank?
Back when I had a 20 gal setup, I got a dimmer and a 100W bulb. Then it is adjustable. Just a thought.

I dont think anyone can answer this because it varies for each person on what they need to get the temps they need. For beardies a basking spot of around 105 F is good so experiment with different kinds of bulbs and use a reliable thermometre to make sure.
Id say start with a 100 watt bulb...that should get the right temps i think.

I use 50W hallogen at 10-12 inch and I can get up to 130F
so a 30W Hallogen would be good, but hook it up with a dimmer..
Halogen provide a CRI of 100 with color them around 3000K
so it's WHITE :D

Icefire: how bright do those hallogen bulbs get, my concern is if I've already got a florescent bulb inside the tank adding another light source could make it VERY bright.
