It is undecided whether or not UVB lighting is required for the care of monitors. Some people do, where as some don't often times with no apparant differences.

I read the mice and rats provides enough D3 and calcium for the bones alone?

I look at it like this. What did people like Frank Retes at Goanna Ranch use "before" the high dollar special UV lights came out?
Answer, same thing they are using now, floodlights.
Worked then, works now.

Exactly. Thousands of baby monitors hatched can't be wrong.

Common Jeffy, you're slacking here! What happened to reproduction not being an indicator of a good state of health?! After all, I can breed bearded dragons without UVB/UVA, right? :)

Yeah, but can you breed beardies, raise those babies to have more babies in under 8 months, and then do that again twice, all without UVB/A? Taking already established adults and breeding them is easy. Under any conditions. Its repeated success with multiple generations that would prove whether or not beardies benefit from different wavelengths of light.

Yes. LOL! However, if I waited until they were three years of age, when the effects of the lack of UVB kick in, I may not be as successful, right? :)
By the way, I am not saying monitors need UVB - just getting on your case of course ;).

Wait I am confused...did you say that Beardies dont need uVB either? Cause I am almost 100% sure they do with their diet of veggies.

No, they definitely need UVB. My point was, I can grow them to eight months of age when they are near breeding size, or at least sexually mature, get them to reproduce for me and repeat the process with the offspring. The whole initiative behind my comment on waiting three years was that by that point the effects of the lack of UVB will be more likely to have had an effect on the lizard.

Anyway...
I dont agree with the whole uv deal with anything. The petstore uv lights throw off next to nothing. IMO only herbivores really benifit from it. Since beardies are ominivorus they get their nutritional needs without full spectrum. Ive clutched many beardies with no uv with absolutly no ill effects.. I do however put them in real sunlight for about an hour a day once its warm enough.. My beardies usually reproduce at around 9 months of age..
With monitors, ive never tried and never bothered.. I havent reproduced any species other than ackies, and i still havent perfected that.. But when you see some of the big names in the states with all of their success with no UV lighting, its pretty obvious what the answer to that is.
