Hello all, i have a few questions if you dont mind. I am considering starting a business which breeds savannah monitors and offers some for hatchlings for sale.
I need to know how the herp room should be, how big what about breeding st ups and so on.
Can anyone help me?

I can't help you with anything to do with monitor breeding, but I just wanted to give you a "thumbs up".

I think he means how big it should be? Heat? Humidity? Who knows?

Soyry what should i set the room up like im going to have a breeding room. Like what should i have?
If you're asking this type of question you're much too inexperienced to be attempting to breed savs. It sounds like you might be better served just keeping some reptiles etc first and go from there.
I'm sorry, but this is one of the dumbest questions I've ever seen. You want to produce savs like people do chickens . good luck, youll need it.
Try your hand out on chickens or even cornsnakes . Heres some advice- keep em for awhile first

If you think you can breed savannahs, go for it and have fun. As for making a living selling them forget it. Noone more than me would like to see a reduction of imported monitors but, it's hard to compete with importers bringing in savannahs for around $1 each.
Good luck

By any chance, are you breeding partners with Don Meyer?

Interesting, best of luck! I still forwarn you that setting up a breeding facility for varanids is not something two teenagers are capable of doing, unless they drop school and all of lifes other commitments.

Yes I understand what your saying...but I will be working mainly with Leopard Geckos...and attempt to breed Tegus and Ackies.

Good choice, and the nile you are looking for? Look man, I do not intentionalyl pick on you but you really need to sit down and map out your thoughts before you act on them. What happens if you get this nile you are looking for, put money and time into building an enclosure, then figure out it is far too much of a workload? Like I suggested earlier, work with Tegu's or an Ackie and see how that goes, before anything else.
I agree with others, get some more expierience with them in order to draw any conclusions of what you want to work with.. You dont make much money breeding large monitors, not to mention how difficult it can be.. Going in it for money will really ruin your enjoyment as well IMO..
Great idea boys, breed a few of the most unwanted varanids around.. oh wait, does this guy know what a varanid is? Sav's are already probably running for $25 a piece in the USA and so there are too many that will be sold to unworthy homes, why does the world needmore of them.
I dont think you get it..

Ya Jeff your right 25 for WC.
Bartman
05-24-04, 11:15 AM
And most people would rather pay 25 for a wc then 200 for a cb...its bad, but most people dont care...
DonMeyer
05-24-04, 11:17 AM
Well hopefully if I ever produce CB I would only sell them to those dedicated to their pets....and not for anywhere near 200.

So then how do you expect to be a good business? Its not easy to sell monitors or pretty much any animal to specific people...i would end this with good luck but id rather not!

No no no....I know how to breed sav. i have before but i was asking how to set up a herp room dedicated to them.....
But nevermind im going to be for all herps. Also i plan to have a guidelines and age ristrictions...We will not be open for a while though.....We have to stock up on reptiles and im writing the script for the site....
We'll most likley be a sucess....

You two have known each other all of 24 hours and you're going into business...with a number of animals that will need exceptional care and expense.
What is the main source of income for both partners? Where do you both reside? In your own homes? Do you have a trust set aside for vet care that could handle ALL your charges getting sick at one time. There is always the possibility it could happen. What will you do if you have animals that you cannot sell? Are you aware of whether there are permits required to operate as breeders in your area? If you're bypassing permits, do you have the money to cover the infraction costs of each animal that violates the by-law. Do you have alternative housing for them if the authorities decide that they must be removed or destroyed if they are not removed from the city proper?
Are you sure you want to go into business with someone whose background is unknown to you? Your future reputation in the reptile community could be severly impacted by how this turns out. At the minimum you should have references, and a basic business plan. And what about legal responsibility. If you're acting in partnership as a company, and one of you screws somebody over, by intent or mistake, are you willing to be on the hook for the other persons actions?
Once you answer those questions there's a few more :)

You state you've bred savs before.
Show us the pics of eggs and hatchlings. Make us believe you know what you are doing.

Honestly, i believe don and now this person are just looking to stir up some arguments..i bet you they arnt doing crap..
And i agree it doesnt look female, or thats a big *** female lool
Males usually get bigger because they fight for females..unlike snakes :)
crocdoc

Bartman, in many snake species the males fight for females, too, and the males get larger.
MyInvision, I was going to comment earlier but thought I'd stay out of this argument, but it has to be said:
1. that's an awfully large female exanthematicus. Got any shots of its head in profile?
2. anyone can take a photograph of a baby monitor bought at a petstore, got any photographs of it coming out of, or next to, its egg?

If you are pretty sure, then how can you have bred them if you dont know?! Wake-up! Either your sure or your lying!
Hey, guess what everybody?! I have bred komodo dragons! And im pretty sure it was a male and a female. I lost my camera and found it 4 months later so I never got any pictures. Hey, does anybody want to breed purple tongue aligators with me? Its a new species I raised in my lab! Im hopping for someone from another place on the globe, so the product can be widely promoted.:D Thanks for any responses!

Yea ill do it..i have two in my parents house!
LMAO :P:D
Yea my bad, figured snakes were the opposite..ah well..but yea..that "female" looks rrrEALLY big...well at least from the females ive seen.
BS Landon, you didnt breed those savs. 6 months ago you had a nile and a sav, both 1 ft long and you were housing them TOGETHER. There is no way it grew up, bred successfully, incubated and the babies were sold.

Haha, was his old user name reptile171? These are funny. What ever happened to your little education program, landon?

All that needs to be added by Matt and Jeff are the words, "CHECK MATE, GAME OVER."
Another reason why I love this site, mods and everyone alike bring evidence to an arguement not speculation.

Hey Chris, since your in Edmonton and I'm in Alabama maybe we can cross your gator and my blackthroat and make a bussiness selling purpletoungedblackthroatgators. That is if your is a female. By this thread I now understand you don't need the pair together for breeding. Maybe we just need to e-mail pictures for the other one to look at.
Gotta admit, if nothing else these guys are entertaining.

Maybe there's a market in reptile porn.
If we put them in the bathroom with a magazine, do you think the males would give us adequate sperm plugs?

This has also turned pointless and no longer serves to better the site.
