Might be easier to just buy pre-washed calci sand from a store..will save you the hassle...but who knows, maybe theirs an easy way!

You could boil the substrate in water.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't sand turn to mud when it gets wet?
it sure does mykee...once i got this sand and it was very powdery and i read to get read of the powder you should let it soak in water, let the water drain then let it dry. i did it and it was wet for a long time. but it would be ok to put him in a cage with newspaper till it dries.

Sand shouldn't turn to mud when wet. Its just silica dioxide (SiO2). Its rather inert. It shouldn't become mud. Not at all.
i didn't really mean mud, but it stick together just like mud, its very mud like. but it goes right back to sand.
