leave it in a container w/ adequate heat, and the food item
try braining the food, if worst comes to worst you may have to force or assisst feed

First off if this is your first bp, you are in for some frusterating times.
second, if you JUST got it, put it in it's home, make sure there are NO husbandry mistakes. and LEAVE IT ALONE for 2 wks, only get into the cage to change the water and MAYBE spot clean. Then offer food.....
Only force feed as a last resort, it may put the snake off eating for even longer.
What methods has this other person used to try and get the snake to eat?
Couldn't have said it better. Follow Saphire's advice and you should do ok.

small cage - 90F hot spot - lots of hiding spaces - clean cage and live mice. If it won't take live after a week or so assist feed it every 4-7 days until it starts taking live on it's own. After you get him eating regularly switch him over to dead food.

If I get a problem feeder hatchling that won't take f/t anything, or dead anything, it takes live fuzzy mice in a heart beat. Try that and see how it goes. But yes, make sure you leave it COMPLETELY alone for about 14 days. Ball pythons are VERY shy animals, and stress easier than any snake I've yet to come across.
Good luck,
Jennifer
