View Full Version : question about breeding
I have heard a female only needs tobe with the male once at the begining of spring to produce fertile eggs throughout the season, is this true?

Yep. Some breeders will place the two back together after a couple of clutches just to ensure proper fertilization, but the female can store the sperm for quite a while (almost a year I've heard)

I've only bred my males to the females twice this year. The females have thrown me fertile eggs all season. Some have fought off the males second breeding attempt with them, simply cause they knew they had enough sperm retained for them not to need to breed again...the males were not happy with this... :)

hmmm, ok, so do you think its a good idea to take my male out of the large group enclosure for awhile now that the girls are laying clutches? Its my second breeding season, and the first for this happy boy ;)

I doubt the girls know they have "enough" sperm.... they just figured out it wasn't fun!:D LOL! Your male can remain Wilma if he is not "harrassing" the girls.... I've only ever had one who needed to be removed.

Ya the females never really do seem to enjoy it...Well how could they, when the males are so damn rough. Bitting and grabbing...,...,lol
