It was another gorgeous day in central Ontario. I took the opportunity to head up to Parry Sound to see if I could find any Massasauga's this early in the year - no dice... Still too cold.
However, the Grays and Peepers were out in full chorus and I also found the first 5-lined Skink of the year (an adult male in breeding condition). Since I have enough pics of skinks I decided not to pursue him, however, under the same rock I also found a Ringneck and a Garter (I did take a photo of this happy couple):

I also came across some interesting invertebrates.
First, this very fast spider (a predatory "jumping" spider I presume):

Second, this very large (and colourful) millipede:

Anyway, keeping the fingers crossed for a Rattler next time... A pretty good day though.
Cheers,
Ryan

The rattlers are crawling around up there Ryan (have been for at least a week). I too have struck out many a time in the PS area. The neat thing is there's always other cool herps to find up there besides massasauga's.

Great photo's!

Thanks Matt ;)

Dave, I would assume that they are out and about this time of year but I was unable to find one. Plus road-cruising is a no go with the cold temps as soon as the sun sets. I thought I would try my luck anyway. It was my first time herping that area so I also didn't know where to go. The one place I found did have a lot of herps but no Rattlers. 4 hours of driving for skinks, ringnecks and garters..... C'est la vie.
Cheers,
Ryan
