View Full Version : Shave It All Off For Road Injured Turtles!

If you love turtles and/or kids read this note!
On June 13 the Ontario Reptile Expo (http://www.reptileexpo.ca) will be held in Mississauga and this time there will be another feature that is somewhat out of the ordinary.
Steve Marks (me) will have his crazy mane shaved off for the sake of turtles and kids! Then to top it all off, I'll have a TURTLE painted on my freshly de-nuded dome! This will all happen in front of hundreds of my peers and friends (so they can have a good laugh)! I assure you there will be video too!
This will all happen IF I raise $2000 for the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre (http://www.kawarthaturtle.org), by 12 NOON June 13. The hair that is chopped off will be sent to Locks For Love (http://www.locksoflove.org/) (to make hair pieces for kids with cancer)
The HIGHEST BIDDER gets to do the deed! I will arrange for a ride for the highest bidder if they do not wish to drive to Mississauga. This is your chance to really tell me what you think of my stupid lid! It's also a chance for you to help turtles! I have already taken two turtles in this spring and these road injured critters really do get fixed up and released right where they were found - it's awesome!
PLEASE EMAIL ME at cerastes@sympatico.ca AND PLEDGE SOME $$$ Every little bit helps, and for a little more YOU could shave my head!
THANK YOU!
Steve:D

Maybe you could save a little for Grant to fill in what he's missing??? ;) Awesome Idea Steve. It's a small price to pay to help others!

That's cool Steve - and that is a lot of hair, you are going to make many wigs.
Maybe I should have a competition with you, to see who can make more wigs with their mop.
Turtles and Kids are 2 great causes, I think you have more guts than I do.
Ryan
That's quite the do Steve. How much more for the mustashe?

Sorry Lisa... the moustache stays! ;)
Come on everyone - if you saw the big old snapper I just took in with his face all smashed in (and he will get completely fixed!) you'd be throwing a hundred bucks in! This is all volunteer work - Vets, keepers, organisers, etc... truly an awesome cause! But they need money - it all goes DIRECTLY to the turtles!
Email me(cerastes@sympatico.ca) for an address to mail a cheque to, or bring a few extra bucks to the Expo June 13.
THANKS!

I just want to say that what you are doing is absolutely wonderful! I am assuming you'll be taking donations from now until the day of the "event"? If so, count us in. We cannot go to the show ourselves, but I'll expect to see many photos posted here on ssnakess! I'll email you tonight. Again, you truly rock! (kinda like the 80's hair, lol)

Thanks so much for the pledges so far! I couldn't possibly name them all, but I'll mention my pal Mike Rankin, the fastest to respond, Don Patterson, the first from the West coast and Kim Heaphy, the first from the East coast. Thanks to them and everyone in between!!!!! Keep it going people!! $2000 is a long way off!
Oh, and thanks to all the ladies for the nice things you're saying about my hair... how come you couldn't have said such sweet things BEFORE I committed to shaving it off! (sigh) ;) ;)
Steve cerastes@sympatico.ca
How about a graph thingy so we can see how close you're getting to bald?

Please help this poor guy (and more importantly the TTC). I have known Steve for a while and I think that he's finally lost it. I guess the good news is that he's doing something positive on his road to insanity.
Send him money now.... don't leave it 'till later!

I just can't wait for the final bidding war over who'll actually do the honors! I hear it's between Dave, Grant, your parents, and Jordan, who just entered the fight this past weekend, with a 3-digit bid! Personally, I hope your parents get it. I imagine they deserve it.

You know for some reason I thought you were getting a turtle TATTOOED on your head, not painted... dunno where that thought came from.
heheh.
I'm hoping to attend but the way things are going I don't beleive I will be able to. You have my e-donation and I hope you make the 2k... How about a progress report?

Yes Lisa! I received your Email cheque - THANK YOU! I didn't even know you could do such things! As for a report, I'm counting on all you herpers to kick in a little something for the turtles... Last night, the KTTC received the largest (wild) snapping turtle I've ever seen. He's being named Rick Mercer! He should be returned to the Newmarket area soon, because thanks to the KTTC, he will recover from his mishap with a big truck! PLEASE MAKE A PLEDGE - ANYTHING AT ALL IS VERY APPRECIATED!!
cerastes@sympatico.ca
yeah, sending the email cheque was way easier then writing one out and mailing it (i'm lazy what can i say). All I needed was your email address and name (cerastes@sympatico.ca - steve marks)... royal bank, scotia, cibc and td all support this method (there's a couple other banks that allow this too i can't remember which though).
The fee for sending the money this way is about the same as writing a cheque and paying for a stamp and envelope only you don't need to get off your butt and go to the post box (takes less time too). The receiver doesn't have to wait for the cheque to clear either :)
hope you make the 2k, for the turtles and the kids... should only take you a few years to grow all that hair back. :)

Hey Everyone! Only a week to go til the expo!! We have a LONG way to go for $2000... PLEASE email me with a pledge TODAY! It doesn't matter what you can give, as long as you give! The turtles have started to lay eggs. I've had three on my property already! One painted got crunched :( The KTTC fixes up the turtles that manage to survive the Michelin Mash, and stes them free again! PLEASE DONATE! DON'T LET MY HAIR REMAIN ON MY HEAD!!

Brian Hawley of Associated Serpents just sent me an email cheque! THANK YOU BRIAN!! Every dime donated goes directly to the care of injured turtles or their salvaged offspring. People effort at the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre (http://www.kawarthaturtle.org/) is all volunteer!
Thanks again to everyone who is pledging me and my crazy mane!
BTW, it's now an international event - thanks to Bobbie!!!
Sponsor me at the expo on Sunday! Highest pledge gets to do the deed!!!
PS... Yeah - I know I'm nuts!

People - I really hope that Steve gets enough cash to shave that thing on his head. There are three reasons to donate....
1) The charity is a perfect place for herpers to throw some cash at. Who doesn't want to save turtles? This is a chance for us that keep critters in cages to show that we also care about wild rep's as well. Plus... you are saving herps right here in Ontario.
2) Who feels bad after giving money to charity? It's one of those things where you feel great after doing it, no matter what.
3) For my friends and I, it would make so much great joke material if he actually has to cut the hair. Really it would.....
Thanks... and send money!

Jordan - the ponytail is going to Kids with Cancer. The rest will end up buzzed onto the floor. If you wanna clean it up, you can try selling it on E-Bay. I hear used curly greying hair is going for a mint these days!

Calling all herpers! The pledges are trickling in... slowly...
If you're coming to the Ontario Expo, you can sponsor in person!
If you're not, please email me with your pledge! It isn't for me - HONEST!! It's for the turtles! The Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre (http://www.kawarthaturtle.org) does such amazing work - all volunteer - but they need money to do this work - food for the turtles equipment, etc. They even need a bigger building to house all these injured turtles in!
PLEASE EMAIL ME - cerastes@sympatico.ca - and sponsor my stupid hair!!!
Thanks!

Well - as irritating as I was on the microphone, we did manage to raise some funds for turtles. A raffle was held by the Kitchener Waterloo group for assorted skulls and other prizes - They took in almost $200. And as for my hair, the ponytail measured 23 inches long. It's going to Locks For Love to make wigs for kids with hairlessness due to illness. And the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre recieves a big $2300!!

Hi there,
I'm not much of a poster here but I just wanted to say that what you did was a really nice gesture. Also, the haircut really suited you so I hope you feel good about yourself inside and out.

I'd love to see the new hair, someone post pictures.
"it could only be an improvement" - was what Jordan was saying....
I think it is really cool your mom got to do it, I bet she's wanted to for a long long time.
It's also cool that some kids with cancer, will now be able to have little Michael Bolton wigs made for them.
