Nest box? bahhhh...that's what the substrate is for. Ha ha. No nest boxes in the wild.

You mean, you forgot right.. No nest box can mean egg binding, and rack kept Hondos are pretty good at that. Perhaps thats more of an excercise problem, but those things usually go nuts looking for a moist spot.
At least she had that wooden shelf to lay under, well half under...

Yeah, I hear ya Roy. I keep hearing people saying that the nest boxes are mandatory for the colubrids, and I fully plan on maybe trying them next year. Too much at stake this year to change what's worked in the past though.

What I've always done (and this goes back to the Cal. King, Corn, and Speckled King days) is just keep the cage at optimal temps, then at Day 6 after pre-lay shed, I just spray the cage down with warm water. If they still haven't laid at Day 10, I spray again. Every cage is kept the same way, and EVERY single time the female will lay at about 2/3 the way back into the Rubbermaid, which is ALWAYS at 83F. It has never failed me. Every single time I take the temp of the female or the eggs at laying time, the range always falls between 82.7F or 84.1F. Seems to have worked for a few hundred eggs so far, but I can see how a wrong move either way and I could have a disaster. I’m all for lessening my micro-management, so perhaps I will go with nest boxes next year. I’ve only ever used one for 2 years of Ball breeding and for the Jungles. Never for any colubrids. I’ll try it next year. Should be fun!

I never really tried breeding them and letting the females lay on just the substrate.

I too think that without the moisture, the female will highly go egg bound. Even though I have never tried it before, this is just from what I have hear and read. So that is why I always have a nest box for the female.

Sounds like a plan Simon. I'll give it a whirl next year for sure. You guys have bred 1000x more colubrids than I have/ever will, so I'm all for giving it a try! I may even try it with the last Hondo that's just ovulated. Just a normal, so I don't see the harm in trying something new there!

Ha ha POSSIBLE het hypos. No 100% hets or hypos until next year. Just normals, albinos and 100% het albinos this year! I'm starting to get pumped on the Hondos. They're totally FUN!
