I am certianly no expert, but a lot of people say newspaper is the best, especially if your snake is new...apparently its easier to spot mites and other "critters" on newspaper than if ya use lizard litter or stuff like that. And also it limits swallowing bedding while feeding. Doesnt seem very "comfy" though does it?...lol

That's an almost impossible questions to answer. There are a lot of opinions but which is BEST? Who knows?

Here are some of my opinions... :)

I use paper towels, carefresh, or newspaper. I usually only use newspaper as a last resort when I run out of the other two :)

News paper, absolutely NO chance of ingestion!

so bark should not be used at all?

Sure it can be used (like repti bark right?) but you have to put something under the snake, or feed in a different cage to make sure he don't ingest any of the substrate.

Paper towels, newspaper, cypress mulch and coconut bark have all been working well for me. I've never liked aspen, though (ESPECIALLY for ball pythons).
