One of the newest addiontions to the Ralph Davis Reptiles collection. I think he got a couple of them by the sounds of it. Pretty neat looking ;)

Yeah, it's definitely different than any other Ball, but it looks like a burn victim to me...

I looked on the Ralph Davis web site and couldn't find any information on these... where did you guys find them? Is there a link somewheres with information on these? On Ralphie's web site, or a forum somewheres?

Thanks,
Bristen.

for those wondering, there's info about this on Ralph's journal:

in "Tuesday_May_11" and "Wednesday_May_12" sections.

It's very interesting looking, but I find it ugly.

Always neat to see the new morphs though :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds this snake unattractive, I thought it was just me :) It's not exactly ugly, the colors just don't appeal to me. It is an interesting morph though, I guess it could "grow" on you. LOL!

I think it looks kind of cool... and most morphs look WAAAAAY better in person too. :)

It looks very different, but not something I would be interested in.. it does look like a burn victim.

Very nice. I am glad to see some those colors - my wife got a little boquet of 1.2 baby balls for mothers day, as she fell in love with the peach fades they had. I was given to think it wasn't something that would remain visible as they got older as I hadn't seen that tone before, but this leaves me hope they'll not outgrow it. The pic flattens the tone a lot from the visible peach under natural light and its definitely not vivid and pink like the bubble-gum. Anyone else have peachy balls?

This little girl pictured, and her sibling were hatching in Africa. Natures' creation ;)

It's looking like an interesting year in Africa so far.........

WHOA. I dunno if I like it or not... lol. But... WHOA. Crazy looking!

Tortoise, I'm guessing he probably imported them... and likely paid a pretty penny for them too :p But I could be wrong, maybe he did produce them...

Personally, I'd like to see a black ball... or something close. The pastels are neat looking... but I prefer the darker colours. Yeah.. I know... I'm wierd... so what? ;)

OK.. as much as I am not at all in to Ball morphs, or really much in to Balls at all... I have to admit that is one AWESOME looking snake!:eek::eek:

Its pretty nuts eh Linds? Hyper-erythristic/hyper-xanthic? Just makes you wonder why Ball Pythons are so variable? Why has nature selected this animal to have so much variation going on in their colour and patterns? I mean 6 or 7 co-dominant colour/pattern morphs within ONE species?? That's just weird.

Cheers all! Let's get Ralphie to donate one to Canada! I'll even look after it and feed it for free! heh heh.........

I wonder if ball pythons really do have a higher morph rate than other species. I'm not sure of the numbers but we might have harvested close to 1.5 million ball pythons from the wild in the last 10 years (150,000 per year). If we had that big of a cross section of wild bred animals from another species then perhaps we would see lots of morphs there too.

It probably does help that ball pythons probably spend most of the daylight hours underground so morphs aren’t as selected against by nature as it would be for a say green iguana for example to be bright yellow or white.

Bristen

I wonder how the number of Ball Python morphs compare to the number of corn snake morphs for example?

marisa
05-18-04, 11:41 AM
I'd say Ball Pythons and corns are pretty close when it comes to morphs.

But if I am right the differance is most corn morphs were "discovered" in captivity while many many Ball Python morphs seem to come straight from the wild.

I've been out of the loop on corn snakes for a while but I still think most of the corn mutations originated with wild caught animals. The thing is with them that they have been catching and breeding weird ones for about 50 years, 4 or 5 times longer than balls. They also have lots more captive produced combinations of wild originating mutations since they have been working on it much longer.

I'm not sure but would suspect from what I've seen raising both that wild corn snakes would be much more likely to be out and about in daylight than wild ball pythons so perhaps really odd colored mutants would be selected against in the wild more with corns.

It is ironic that even though we here in the US have access to wild caught corns that the vast majority of those for sale are captive bred but almost all ball pythons sold in pet stores are harvested from Africa (although the stores claim otherwise).

I think another factor in favor of morphs being found in ball pythons is the small clutch size. Perhaps the number if imported green iguanas might rival ball pythons but with the much smaller clutch size (1/10th?) there would tend to be many more wild parents represented and hence greater chance of the genetic diversity needed to supply new mutations. Also, I think the same breeder iguanas may be used year after year but with ball pythons it may well be that mostly different parents are responsible for the babies imported each year (not sure how many iguanas are actually “farmed” vs. just harvested like ball pythons). With ball pythons, 150,000 babies might represent 20,000 – 30,000 different mothers. With iguanas, that might only be 3,000 mothers so much less genetic diversity.

Basically I think there are so many ball python morphs in captivity because as a secretive hole dwelling species they can afford to have morphs in the wild and we are taking a huge and varied sampling of the wild population's genetics every year.
