My new BP makin a call

haha, im feeding him for the first time tomorrow. if i can find a rat small enough then ill buy that but both of my friends have bp's and theyve been feeding them mice since they got um over two years ago and their both alive and well. Do they sell baby rats small enough for him to eat?? what are they called?

You can buy rats of all sizes.. Try and get a rat the size of an adult mouse.. Your store might call them something different then stores around here.. But i know the pet shop near me calls em 'hoppers'..

how do you know they are well? Can you crawl inside the snakes brain? Feeding a snake something the size of a pink (or if a bigger snake a adult mouse) is like giving you half a granola bar for breakfast, half for lunch and half for supper, wouldn't fill you up and you would be hungry.

If your friends put their head in a crocs mouth would you? If your friends ate live corn snakes, would you? Just because your friends do it doesn't mean they are right.

Listen to the BREEDERS that have successfully breed and kept these snakes for YEARS upon YEARS.

THeir still breathing and slithering around so its safe to say their well. Might not be full but well. Anyways what does everyone recommend for the bottom of the tanks. SOme people say artificial turf, tree bark, or the recycled fluffy paper stuff. Just wondering what works best. Hopefully the BREEDERS will have some good input on this one for me and dont worry everyone tomorrow ill be looking to buy a small rat for my bp to eat. I dont see how the lil guy is gonna be able to fit him in but we'll just have to wait and see........He was just born a few weeks ago so he's not that big

Check out this page knads. You can use it for a size comparision, and it should help you figure out what you want. Feed prey that is the same diameter around as your snake at it's thickest point, or go a little bigger. From the looks of your picture, your snake could take a frozen/thawed/warmed fuzzy rat.

As per your substrate (the "stuff" at the bottom of the tank) question, I would recommend newpaper for the first few months because it is easy to maintain, you can check for the presence of external parasites (mites), and you can easily collect a fecal (poop) sample that you need to take to the vet so they can check for internal parasites in your snake. If you haven't located a vet in your area yet, try the links in my signature. One of them should be able to help you out.

On this note, I just adopted a 10 yr old and a 12 yr old. That have been fed way too little. Yes they can survive but if you call a 10 yr old animal that weighs less than a 3yr old should weigh I would not call that well :( !!!! Just because they can survive does not mean it is ok to do it because someone else has done it. Both the snakes I have taken in are slithering around and breathing but they are most likely permanently stunted and may have other problems long term. Do you feed a cat or a dog only half or 1/4 of what it should be eating!! Common sense hopefully will prevail here for the safety and well being of the animal. :(
