What monitor is a herbivore?
I'm wanting to look into getting one, but I'm already thinking of getting a lot of animals that require live food, so a herbivorous monitor would be best.

Thanks in advance,

I really dont think their are any that would be available as a pet, or cb at least..and if it was possible i bet they'd be a crap load of money.

Correct me if im wrong..

There is a herbivore varanid.... It's a philipines species, I can't recall its full name.. But no, Bartmans right, you wont find ANY in captivity, I actually think they're endangered? mark bayless would know a hell of alot more.. Good luck.

Oh, okay. I just thought I had seen a herbivorous Monitor on one of the posts one time. I guess I was just dreaming, lol.

All tegus will eat lots of veggies, and fruits.. mostly as adults though.

Get an australian water dragon. Awesome looking, hardy as hell and will eat an omnivorous diet.

the monitor you were thinking of that is Philippine and a herbivore (fructivore, actually) is Grey's monitor, Varanus olivaceus. They also eat snails and crabs. There is another, newly discovered, closely related species, Varanus mabitang, that appears to have a similar diet.

Hi DK and others,
Varanus mabitang is a true herbivore, feeding on leaves; there is a third undescribed fructivorous or herbivorous one out there too - seen photo of it, but its so new has no name....
cheers,

Do any of them have a price tag? I can only imagine the cost...

Thanks for all of your responses.

I guess there is no herbivorous monitor (that is readily available).

Is there such thing as a monitor that can eat rats/mice regularily. The main reason is that I don't really like to keep crickets.

Thanks,

Most monitors can fare quite well on a rodent diet. Still though, as juvis they do need a variety..

Also try to give them some variation as adults. Roaches, snails, turkey, eggs, and fish are all things I heard of that you can give them.

I also heard you can give them dog/cat food, but NEVER feed them things like that!
