Dropped by the NVRE (No. VA Reptile Expo) this past weekend hoping to find a white-lipped. I was out of luck but my 13 yo son saw this Black Blood and fell in love with those eyes. Used his birthday money and snagged him after a bit of handling. Night and day from my Red - this fella is insanely good tempered and has yet to show a sign of skittishness. Lil guy's about 18-20".

Wife also got a boquet of 3 baby BPs (1.2) for Mother's Day - I couldn't resist after seeing her oogle over their sweet peach fades.

beautiful.

Is there a row of small scales between the lip scales and the eyes? Are black bloods also borneos?

That was a good find, should turn out to be an excellent black blood. How much did you score him for?

he was snagged for US$120. I really dig how a lot of them have an almost ovular black marking low on the iris, and now am intrigued by that feature versus, say the way our Red's eyes are nearly bisected horizontally with that coloration. Is this uniform, locality-based, prone to abberance like pattern?

Here's a pic of the Red's eye:

Hey,
Great looking little black blood. It should turn into a nice looking animal as an adult.

Saphire! No! Sumatran Short-tails (AKA: Black Bloods), and Borneo Short-tails are two completely different animals.

Black bloods AND Borneos have the row of small scales between the lip scales and eye....
Black bloods get 3.5-4.5 feet.
Every (red) blood I've seen has had that same eye pattern, so I think it's inherent to that species, and not necessarily determined by the skin pattern....
I love the eyes of a black blood... I especially love the orange headed ones... The one your son picked is a beauty!!!
Like that red blood also... It even looks a little pissy!!! LOL
Looks ready to take out that camera lens.....
ax.

Yeah she (KaliMa - the red) def has a lot of "spirit" - she's getting better though. Truly an ambush predator she will never strike while you are looking at her, but avert your gaze . . . heh.

Ax, on the eyes I agree all the Reds I see seem pretty uniform in appearance, how about the blacks? I haven't seen a lot of good head/eye shots but the few I have seen seem to be that same black oval towards the bottom hemisphere.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback, folks!
