Nile - how many times should it be fed?

Ya dont worry monitors store fat in their tails there is absolutely no need to feed your nile absolutely every single day
it is ok tho when they are young but when they are older theuy may become obese...

as juvis they should be fed every day. If you don't have bugs you can offer smelts (fish) or other seafoods/shellfish... And of course, pinkies, or ground turkey.. even eggs (only on occasion!!) No, the monitor won't die of starvation if you miss food, even if you miss for a couple of weeks. But juviniles grow faster and are far healthier when fed regularly. (daily).

Adult monitors kept properly rarely become obese.. I feed all of my adults as much as they'll eat every 4-5 days. Sometimes it can be up to 15 rodents, chicks etc..

Good luck, Niles are ALOT of fun. Don't become discouraged if its overly aggressive. its in their nature. enjoy it!

my nile isnt aggressive at all... he just goes crazy when i clean his tank, he'll run, jump, hiss and puff... he also blew up my bulb, he jumped in the water and it splashed on the balb and it blew up! POP... pretty cool, nearly gave him a heart attack...

just curious... what do u feed him when hes too big for crickets? mice everyday?

Yet, lol. When older, they can eat a variety of things - from rodents, to as mentioned smelts and other seafoods/shellfish - they'll eat nearly everything you offer them. However, only what is healthy, nutritious and tends to the monitors needs should be offered. Generally, rodents are fed as a staple diet. Of course, a varied diet is important, and should not be neglected.

my parent go to the asian markets alot and i was wondering can i feed my nile the kinds of fish and shells there? its pretty cheap alot cheaper than the pet store!

Hey, you mentioned the light blowing up on you, and I just picked one up thought I'd mention it, If you can find a farm supply store they have heat lamps normally used for pigs or chickens, but they are resistant too water spraying on them , might want too think of it if it becomes a problem, (they are also cheaper and more efficent then pet store lights) at least the ones I get are.

Get an outdoor bulb. If they weren't water resistent, just think of the chaos!:)

As for seafoods as monitor food i'd stay away from that. You should only feed fresh water things like crayfish fresh water clams etc...but yes variety is the spice of life just no salt water fish etc...my nile also really loves cockroaches and they are easier to keep and far less smelly than crickets.
