Ok... in order to save myself from re-typing all of this story I am going to just copy/paste from my AIM conversation.

Today's school day was not the ordinary school day! :P

I was sitting in the Vice Principals office because he was helping me with Algebra II and I heard on the walkie-talkies that there were two black racer snakes outside underneath the trailers in the back of the school. They wanted to call animal control but I was like ''Dude, I'll go catch them'' and they let me!!

So I went out there with another guy and we saw the snakes go under the trailers, so we waited it out. They came out a few times but quickly went back under, about an hour later the male came out and went underneath the stairs by the trailer. So the guy got on one side and I got on the other and he took a broom handle and made the snake go my way. Then I hear someone go ''there it is!'' and I look behind me and it's about a foot away from me, so I swing around and grab it's body.

It didn't try to bite me... it was actually very calm until I gave it to the other guy, then he tried to bite him, so I took the snake back into my own hands. And it was 1st lunch and we had to find the v-principal... so we were walkin down the hall with this 4 ft. black racer, lol. And we went through the library to avoid the security lady, and this idiot kid, Blake, came up and HIT the snake on the HEAD! It freaked out and wrapped around my arm and almost bit my shoulder.

So anyway... we ended up going to the security lady and she was actually really nice about it, she just said for us to go across the street and let the snake go in the woods... so I took the snake out there and let it free... it was so awesome!!!!!

I wanted to keep it SO bad... but I couldn't. :(

I wasn't quite sure what forum to post it under... and since Black Racers are venomous, I figured this the best forum.

Black racers are not venomous. If you believed they were, it wasn't very bright to freehandle one.

A snake you are carrying in public needs to be physically protected from people who may grab it, strike it or otherwise do stupid things that will be alarming to the snake like waving their hands around its head. Chances are that the alarmed snake will bite you since you're the one holding it. Better yet, if you have a choice, don't carry the snake in public view. I've been in similar situations and disappeared the snake under my shirt while walking it through a crowd to avoid this kind of reaction.

My mistake... I mis-read my information, sorry!

I know I should have kept the snake out of public view, but we had no choice but to go through the school library. I was busy talking to a teacher, explaining why the snake was in the library, when Blake came and hit the snake. And I didn't think that racers were venomous until quite a few people told me that they were... so when I was trying to re-locate it I didn't think it was venomous. Yes, I could have handled the situation better and could have done more to prevent stupid mistakes... but oh well. I'm just glad that none of us were hurt.

lol ya if a black racer was venomous and you did that I would have just called you a tool and your VP a moron. Hopefully you'll give your next enconter a bit more thought. "I didn't think it was venomous" wouldn't really cut it if someone got hurt.

Great job on saving the snake but as everyone said just be more careful next time and identify then catch the snake. If you are going to proceed with dealing with reptiles I suggest picking up a National Audobon for North American Reptiles & Amphibians its a great book and saved my butt when I first started.:D

Thanks ElapheMan. I'll surely pick up one of those books, I've been meaning to get one... lol. I have also been researching what kinds of snakes and such are native to North Carolina.
