I just got a kenyan sand boa from the show and ive followed care sheets but i was just wondering if anyone can see something im doing wrong.

(pics down)
Using a ten gallon tank
Screen lid
50 W bulb that gives a 90 basking zone
sand substrate of about 2 inches- ive been advised to change but to what?
snake dish
two pieces of cork bark on each end
some decoration plants

the snake is about 6 or 7 inches long.

My other question is how to feed these guys. Should i dangle food or should i leave it. Should i take them out to feed, if i do and use a rubbermade or something do i dangle or leave. Should their be anything on the bottem?

How long do you think it will take him to settle in and eat..and should i still try every week?

thanks!

edit:

oops forgot a pic and yea snake dish water dish..just the ones like for snakes..not the potting plant thingy's :)

What's a snake dish? Water dish?

Where are you measuring temps - since your sand boa will burrow, you need to measure temps under the substrate (you can also measure on top, but I believe under the substrate is best). What are the temps on the other side?

I use crushed walnut shells. Many use aspen or similiar substrates. When I first got my KSB, I fed him in a deli cup (lid on). I just put the food in there with him. I've heard many sand boas don't take from tongs. Now I put a piece of carpet on top of his substrate and sit the food on the carpet and he eats fine.

I personally let my snakes settle in for 1-2 weeks w/o much handling before attempting to feed. But that's just me.

Hi Adam,

In addition to my 2 adults I picked up a Nuk and Anery at the show aswell...

"50 W bulb that gives a 90 basking zone"
......I use a UTH 90 on the bottom.

"sand substrate of about 2 inches- ive been advised to change but to what?"
......Beta Chip- I have a big bag you can have some

"My other question is how to feed these guys."
I set a live pinkie mouse in a rimmed dish in the tank for the first feeding. The adults I feed in a rubbermade

"Should i dangle food or should i leave it."
I...... just leave it.

"How long do you think it will take him to settle in and eat..and should i still try every week?"
......Mine ate the second day, and I will be feeding them weekly

Regards
Brian

Don't sand boas like to bury themselves in the substrate? How would your KSb bury itself in what looks to be 1/2 an inch of substrate?
