Do Snake See ? Yes/no ?

me and my gf are betting. she says snakes have eye but do not see and i say snakes have eye and do see.

i'm right i know... but she wants the $25 from me for loosing the bet about snakes can hear or not.. i said snakes pick up vibrationg, she said snakes can hear voice and what not..

so she won .. .. after few research on line..

but


NOW .. i want to be even...

yes snakes can see, they just don't always have the best of eye sight.

I am also sorry on the hearing thing. Snakes don't have ears and pick up on vibrations through their jaws (I think, but I know they can't hear like people or dogs can)

Point out to your friend that fish don't have ears either, but they pick up sound vibrations via their lateral line.

Yes, snakes can see though they rely more on smell than anything. One night I was feeding my okeetee and as I put the fuzzy in there, it kind of slid down the plastic side of the rubbermaid container. He was so convinced it was still there (smell) that he opened his jaws and tried to swallow that side of the rubbermaid THREE times before he finally found the fuzzy on the floor below him....

Sapphire: Yup, they're very sensitive to vibrations. With my garters, they can be in their hide at one end of a 4 foot long tank, and if I let one drop of water fall into their water dish they'll both charge it in search of fish.

If you put them on something that dampens vibrations you could jump up and down, scream, break stuff, and they wouldn't have a clue you were there if they couldn't smell you or see you.

Snakes certainly can hear and it is kind of inappropriate to say they're "deaf." Obviously, the detectable frequency range is much smaller and is more restricted to long-wave sounds and vibrations, but they are able to detect vibrations in media (solids, air, etc). This sense is of course termed "hearing." Although snakes lack external ears, snakes "hear" via an arrangment in their jawbones. They are almost completely deaf to airborne sounds (note, I said almost, they can detect very low wave frequencies in air). Snakes still have the stapes bone (they lack the malleus and the incus), these three bones are sometimes referred to as the hammer, anvil and the stirrup. Any vibrations picked up by the skull or sekelton are carried through the quadrate bone to the stapes and then into the inner ear (auditory nerve). It is best to realize that they are mainly sensitive to ground vibrations rather than "sounds." But it is still hearing. All animals differ in their hearing capabilities and no one would say a human is deaf just because an owl can hear a mouse in the leaves from 50 feet away and the human cannot ;).....

For eyesight, everything that has been said is correct. Snake vision is mainly for motion detection; however, some diurnal species have exceptionally accute vision and some species merely have vestigal eyespots that can detect only the difference between light and dark but that's about it.....

No, I wasn't addressing the tactile detection of vibrations (like putting your hand on a railroad track - which is akin to what deaf people "feel" when music is played). My post is about the detection of vibrations by the auditory nerve, the definition of "hearing"....
