I found this info, and some other disgusting stories, on one of the hunting forums I frequent. Anybody going down there to serve up a hearty helping of whoop-a$$ as an appetizer before they fire up their BBQ? Damn, I wish we lived closer...

OKEENE OK,
HUGE RATTLE SNAKE ROUND UP.
hold it every year,
we're talking big bucks for snakes, and some of the best snake barbaques you'l ever eat.
a buddy of mine made about 5600 bucks in about 25 mins. of picking,
caught 18 huge snakes in one den.
one snake brought about 700 bucks at the auction.
it was nearly 6 ft long and as big around as your forearm.

Anybody wanting the link to all the other events posted in the thread I found this on, PM me, I will be happy to forward it to you. Posting it here would be like trying to put out a grease fire with gasoline.

Geez, if a community played their cards right, they could raise rattlers on ranches and then "plant" them in an area for the tourists to show up and partake in the roundup.

Now before a bunch of people freak out on my head, this would be an alternative to destroying wild populations, while keeping the tourist trade alive in those communities. There is no way in hell you could simply tell them not to kill snakes and have them listen. It would be the same as telling firshermen they can't fish because it depletes the stocks.

Still, even if a community were convinced to switch to ranching, there's nothing humane about the way they handle them in the end :(

They could promote the area as a tourist attraction - home of the most ignorant and uneducated people in the state :D

If it kept the money coming in, I think they'd only raise a minor fuss :) hehe.

One Roundup is enough for me. I can't take going to another one :(

Am I the only one wondering how they got $700 out of a wild caught WDB?

What can I say, Oklahomans are bordering on retardation.
Oh, and we are easily amused.

Ive never been to Okeene, but the Apache and Waurika rattlesnake round up seems to be dissapearing in all the years they've been around. Waurika never puts up ads, radio brodcasts or anything anymore.
They are actually rather boring, the rides are hardly working, The rides are for like 3 yr olds, and the snake pit has a woping "4" snakes..
The guy at Apache is actually really knowledgeable about the snakes but he's only in it for the money.. Ive never actually went to Waurika's but I live like 15 miles from it so I'm always passing through..
