Carpet Chameleon

The petstore at Herongate Mall, Ottawa had the sexiest carpet chameleon I have ever seen in my life. It essentiall looked exactly like the one in the picture (that I took from the Kammers site .. sorry Kammers) except nicer.

I would have bought it but .. you know .. I have no money (as usual). They also have an Ambanja panther with red bars. I beleive both were $160.00 (in case anyone here is interested).

If it makes you feel any better, it is the only store here with reasonable prices. Another store wanted 350 for a Nosy be ... crazy I say.

lol i paid 327 for my nosy be only cause winnipeg is really hurtin for reptiles and thats the only reliable source I have. I love carpet chameleons its to bad they only live for a couple of years

I had a male carpet, WC, already adult when I bought him from someone else. It's anyone's guess how old he was when he died, but I had him for just short of 4 years.

Exaactly .. with proper care its only guessing how old they will live.
My Dwarf Panthers were 9 months when purchased just of over a year ago, so theoretically they have a year or so left. Hopefully they will hold on for longer, but its anyones guess.
All I know is that those two will be impossible to replace.

Dwarfs only live two years or so? That's crazy! I figured chams were a long-lived species.

Some are. Veilds have lived upwards of 15 years in the wild and usually 5-7 in captivity. The dwarfs have two things really limited their life span. They are small, so right away that usually means a shorter life and they are both females, so they egg laying takes a tole over time. They should live between 2 and 4 years.

Veileds don't live that long in the wild. I'd say a solid age on a male veiled in captivity would be 7-9 years. I've heard of some 11-12 but thats rare and they don't live as long in the wild as they can in captivity. That isn't to say that the average life of a chameleon in captivity is more than the average in the wild as most captive veileds don't approach their full life in captivity. C. parsonii are thought to live between 15-20 years. Smaller species like lateralis are about 4 years or so and little Rhampholeon are more like 2-3.

Thanks Chris. I thought I heard 15 for veilds somewhere .. guess I was wrong.

They lady said she was just under a year old. They had another female who was entirely deep deep purple. Very nice indeed.

so they live less then 4 years? hmmm, and how old do you think this on is at the store, and if the colours look like that its gravid, when its not gravid does it still look like that or is it a dull colour, and if you breed these does the male have to be a carpet chameleon, just curious

When not gravid they are more green colored, not as much paterning and other colors. I don't know what else you'd breed it to other than another carpet chameleon. If you are thinking about panther chameleon localities and crossing localities, it is not the same. All panther chameleons are the same species, Furcifer pardalis, regardless of locality, Ambanja, Nosy Be, etc., those are just names of the area they come from. Carpet chameleons are a totally different species, Furcifer lateralis. Is that what you meant?
