View Full Version : Too much innuendo?

I'm starting up my website soon, and I'm slightly unsure about what it will actually be called.
I was kind of set on "Bighead Herps", but my girlfriend says she would be too embarrased to tell her friends and parents what it was called. She thinks it sounds too much like "genital herpes" or something. What do you guys think? Do it anyway?

i think bigheadreptiles.com
It's got a ring to it, but if you plan on eventually going into business someday, I would try a name that sounds a litttle more professional.

grrr... so far my girlfriend is winning. I have to admit I kinda liked a little innuendo. Please keep the ideas coming. :)
Just curious, how is "Bighead Herps" innuendo?

I guess it's not actually innuendo, it just sounds a little wrong to those people who don't know what "herps" are, and think "bighead" may be a reference to something it's not. Seems silly to me too, but not to my girlfriend.

My business name is Woodland Edge Herps. In 9 years, I've never had anyone ask me about the 'Herps' part of it. Most people who will be looking at your site, or dealing with you already know the word. Non-herpers don't normally bother with us. You'll probably hear a snicker or two no matter what you call your business. Look at Mel Lastman's 'Bad Boy' enterprise....

If your naming your business you want to take into account naming conventions and what they mean to a small business.
If your name was John Doe, and you called yourself John Doe Reptiles, then you don't have to register for certain aspects (and you also don't have to get a GST number until you reach 30k income annually).
If you use a name other than your own you have to register your business. I'm not sure of what all it entails. I'm still looking for my small business owners guide that got lost in the last move :)
If you're going to be doing anything that doesn't use your given name, pay for a name search, as you don't want someone to come along after you have a recognized name and force you to stop using it because you infringe on their trademarked business title.

I like the idea of putting your name behind what you sell. You know? Who is BigHead?
But "made-up" names can work really well too... "BigHead Herps" doesn't sound too bad to me and is it YOUR company or your girlfriend's???? ;)

Snake people will know what the herp part means. I can think of far worse innuendo's in herp businesses.
I once was at a dinner for volunteers, as president of HISS. I wrote down "herp information society of Saskatchewan" so as not to make the person reading guess how to say herpetological. Well, long story short - he didn't even get herp right, and the room erupted in laughter.

As I mentioned, I like and dislike the name. I like it because of the imagery you can attribute to it (ie. a herp with a big head, cartoonish) but at the same time, I believe names should have a "story" or "meaning" to them. And I can't find a meaning in that name, LOL!
I say go for it, if you like the name. After all customers will be more conserned with the qaulity of the herps you sell not the breeders name itself. Good luck either way.

How about "Ellsworth Herpetological"? It's my middle name, so I could cover that issue. Maybe it sounds too professional? I don't know. lol. :)

Ok, I only have a day or two left to decide. Any more suggestions? My name is Jordan Jansen. For some reason it just doesn't seem to flow with the reptiles thing. What do you guys think?

Abby Reptiles? At the moment I live in Abbotsford and lots of the locals call it Abby. How does that sound?
