Burm & Retic Pic Request!

Hey guys....I am currently working on a cage project which will be 3 4x2x2's stacked on each other....I am buying a female Albino Burm, a Male Tiger Retic, & a Female Super Tiger Retic.

Just wondering if I could see your adults of those kind! And what they cost you. Please mention if your in Canada.

Oh and dont worry about future caging. I have a large basement area that can easily fit 5 or 6, 6x2x2 or 6x3x2's:)

Just a reccomendation:

-For those smaller cages and the three new snakes, i assume you are going to put the younger snakes in those smaller cages? You might want to consider making those a foot or two longer for their younger stage as they may all hit 6ft in a year easily.

-You say you have a room that would easily fit 5 or 6 of those larger cages? If you plan on using those for the adults, i dont understand why you would have more cages of that size than snakes? And also, the new burm, retics, and your current burm will all need cages ALOT bigger than the ones you talk about for future cages. The retics would probably need their own room/s!

I hope you know what you are getting into. If you plan on using those larger cages only until they outgrow them, you might want to skip the 6x2x2 or 6x3x2 cages and just make the first ones 5x2x2 and then build their cages for when they are fullgrown.

I am putting the young Burm, and two Retics in a 4x2x2 for the time being. That should easily last them there first year. I use the rule the cage is no less than half the snakes length. So when they exceed 8ft is when I will build the 6ft cages. But from Retic Chicks PM...I am going to build 8ft cages now instead.

I also know what I am getting into. WHen I grow up I want to own a reptile business. And I am slowly starting to get pairs. So instead of buying the Scrub, Blood, and ATB's that I want I am just getting more of what I have. I want to get into Retics so thats why I am buying a pair of them.

I am also getting a Hypo Male Boa probably in the next year or so

Why are you getting this and that and this and that when you haven't even bred anything yet. Should you not think to start out with something maybe a little easier than a burm as your first breeding project. For the burms, retics, and wahtever the hell else your getting, your gonna need a massive incubator. Also, this is gonna cost you lots. I mean new cages, feeding 4 giant snakes, plus boas. Maybe you shouldn't rush things so much...

I say it is his money his animals his time invested. let him start where he feels more comfertable with. If he likes Burms and Retics more then ball pythons and corn snakes so be it.
what you may call complicated. May be the exact reason why he loves this hobby.

i totally agree with reptizone. you take care of what you want not what people think is better for you just because your a starter. people said that i shouldnt be taking care of caimans koz i dont have any experince with them. 2 yrs later, still really healthy and growing fast...

I agree that it is acceptable to start with whatever species you are most interested in, not necessarily a "beginner" species. The odds will be stacked against you don, but i wish you luck.

I am however concerned that you won't be able to afford to keep all these giant pythons. Perhaps somebody could post the average cost of feeding a full grown retic for a year is. I'm sure it's a pretty penny.

correct me if i'm wrong, but can't a retic exceed 8 feet in 1 year?

Anyways, i'm not really a snake guy, so i'm out of my element here. I'll let the pros discuss!

Well. in this case, its obvious he doesn't know all he should know... He thought his 6 ft male burm was ready to breed, thought a 6X2 cage would be good for an adult (I think). etc etc. And he wants this and that, and it sounds like he thinks eh can just house 100 snakes in the blink of an eye... just my opinion though.

Cyrus: Of course people won't recommend a caiman to you, it's like recommending a naja to a beginner... but if there ever was a crocodilian to start with, I guess it would be that one...

672. A 6ft male Burm could easily be bred...the smaller the male the better. I am not going to wait until he gets 15ft to breed him. IMO I truely think the BEST size is 8ft for a male...which by the time I get my femael he will be well over 8ft.

I am not going to get the Retics this year either....2 burms is enough.

Also I have been working since I was 15 (literally). And I make a good 100 a week...usually more. I get all my food from shows so its really cheap.....and I have another YEAR or two before I even attempt to breed Burms....you guys make it sound like I said I'm going to go out this week...get a female....and start lowering temps and daylight. Geeze

No, a 6ft male burm could not easily be bred. no, the smaller is not the better. Do you think people breed 8ft females,...no! same for males. Why do you think that 8ft burm is the best to breed, I'd say the older it is the better.

Yes the older...but I am not gonnna breed a 13ft female to a 15ft male.......you want the male a smaller size...and I think an 8ft male is MINIMUM....and 10ft for a female is MINUMUM.

I think a female should have good weight and atleast 15 feet also brought along slowly and not power fed to reach size. A female burm could breed at 2 years but it would be better to breed at 3 or even 4 years.

A male at 8 foot could breed......

I would not breed a 10 foot female though. That is just me though. as I would rather wait another year then have the chance of something going wrong.

If you think about it...it isnt the size...its the age. If I had a 10ft female and she was 4yrs old and good weight she could breed. I htink its more on the age issue if anything

Size plays a part too believe me.........

Burms are large animals and breed at large size. If you want to breed some snakes around 6 to 10 foot get

JCPs
Bloods
Balls(I know a little smaller)
BCI
BCO
ATBs
But burms do better at larger size. a 15 foot female IMO would do a lot better then a 10 footer.

But like I said this is JMHO. You can try anything.
