My Eastern Diamondback has lost his motor skills. His breathing is fine and he is aware of his surroundings but can't coordinate any of his movements. I spoke to a freind of mine and he thinks it might be dehidration but is not to sure. I soak him every week and give him lots of fresh water. I've never had this problem before and am worried it might be a virus. Does anyone know of something I might be able to do? I'm worried it's a little to late though. Other than he stopped feeding about three weeks ago the loss of his motor skills just hit today. Please help. Thanks.

Looks like you've got a long drive ahead of you. You're responsible for the health of the animal, so the location of a vet should have been taken into account when you got it.

Sorry to be preachy, but that should have been planned for before you got the snake.

Thanks and well desirved but their arn't vets that will look at vens. always close. If this was just to get the snake looked at for a check up it would not be a problem but I'm worried I don't have time meaning that I think the snake can't handle the trip. Also this is something I've never seen before in any of my collection and am wondering if any one has heard of this before.

Sounds like it can very well be paramyxovirus (AKA star gazing disease)...... It causes neurological problems that do hinder motor skills...... That would be the worst case....... If that is indeed the case you should get every other reptile far away from the snake that is giving you problems......
Paramyxovirus is highly contagious and WILL wipe out your entire collection....... Once a reptile gets this virus there is nothiong that can be done for it....... A reptile can carry this virus for a while before it starts to show symptoms........
I think you need to do what ever it is, to get it to a vet....... If you do not have a vet that will see your snakes, or you can not treat them yourself, you should not keep them..... Plain and simple....... I feel sorry for you but you need to have everything in line before you decside to keep animals like this.....

What town are you located in beagle? With a bit of searching we might be able to shorten how far you need to travel.

Thanks for the reply Gregg M. I'm worrid that it might be paramyxovirus too and put him in quarentine. I spoke to a herpitologist and he's sure that it is that too.
Look guys I no I'm not a vet and I'll be the first to admit that. I've been keeping for fifteen years and have lost 2 animals to something that I could not get treatment for because time was a issue and I'm scared I'm going to lose a third. I've always been able to prevent anything, which I diffently think is the key to keeping any herps. I honestly would take an animal to a vet if I thought it had a sickness and I had the time to get the animal there before it died. Also lets say you had a vet and he or she moved, it dosn't mean you stop doing what you love or move to were there is a vet, you try to do the best you can and I'm doing that otherwise I wouldn't even be here asking you guys for help. There are alot of knowledgable people on this site so I thought I'd ask for help. Again thanks for the reply Gregg. I rely do appreciate it. I'm trying to get ahold of vet.

If you can not find a vet and it dies I suggest you get a necropsy done to find out exactly what it is that caused the death...... If you lost 3 animals in 15 years, you are doing pretty good...... I hope everything works out for you and you can get to the bottom of this.....
Sorry if I came off like an a$$.......
Gregg

Still not a great selection of options to choose from.

A number of things can cause CNS symptoms- bacterial or parasitic infections are among the most common. Physical trauma caused by overheating is another. The cause may also be a virus. You need good diagnostic tools to discover and treat the problem.

You may find some help at www.snakegetters.com/demo/vet

No one seems to have said that they have had a similar problem. It would be great to make the best of this and learn from other peoples experiences. I wonder if there is anything that he should do for the snake before he see a vet to help better his chances.

Well if it is paramyxovirus there is nothing that can be done at all.......

CNS symptoms does not equal paramyxovirus. I would be much more concerned about OPMD if the snake died spewing blood from its trachea. OPMD snakes can die without respiratory symptoms, with only mild CNS symptoms or even without any symptoms at all. The paramyxo titer test at the University of Florida's Wildlife Teaching Hospital only costs $30, so I've been a regular customer. Peace of mind for relatively little expense.
