If you wouldn't mind explaining a bit, I've just started doing research on them and havn't read anything about a dark/light phase.

bidden: Yes, it's the same beardie. When dragons are in a cooler environment, they're colors dull up and become lighter. When they are basking in the sun, in a warm/hot environment, excited or scared, their colors get darker. In the sun, they're colors get darker to absorb more heat. Like, you know if you wear a black t-shirt outside in the sun, you get hot faster than if you wear a white one? It's like that.

Dani: Chester is a normal x sandfire from Frank at beardieworld.com. :) He's my baby, hehe. I couldn't ask for a better dragon. I'll post more pics of him soon.

It's amazing the colors they can "change" too. I love the color mine turn when they go outside. I took my girlie out yesturday and she loved it, turn some nice dark color and had some beautiful orange shine through. Can't wait till tomorrow both of them get to play outside.

Since we've been having such nice weather here, I've been taking Chester outside more often. He really hasn't been all too active though because he just wants to mate! I need to find him a girlfriend... fast!

While the darkening of the dragon makes sense to me if it's warm, it makes no sense to me why the dragon would turn a lighter colour if it were cold. If the dragon were cold, wouldn't it want to be an even darker colour in order to absorb as much heat as possible? *scratches head*

You know, that makes a lot of sense. I have no idea... but fact is fact.

when a dragon is hot, generally their colour changes to a light shade. That way they don't "draw" the heat towards them.

When they are cold, they darken, in order to attract as much heat to them as possible.

aside from heating, their colours can vary greatly depending on their mood, situation, environment, etc.

take my snow male for example: normally he is fairly dark for a snow. ( greyish ) Once he is as warm as he wants to be, he goes very very white. When he's horny, he goes fairly dark, with a very black beard. Intimadating. I will try to get pics.

Haley, your boy is absolutely gorgeous.
