I was talking with one of my buddies, he likes reptiles too, and he was talking about how he would love to make a giant display tank.

So I go to him that theirs no point of making it big for just one animal or a couple of the same thing, so he goes, id put a gtp..since its pretty much completely aboreal..fish and a turtle at the bottem in a pool....so the a tree would come out of the water for the gtp.

I know your not supposed to mix species but this is sort of bending the rules since they wouldnt come into contact with each other.

So, would this work?

Things like that have been done, with sucesses and failures, but it would be quite hard to maintain the proper environment and EXTREMELY expensive. But it can be done.

Simply saying one could house mixed species is not correct either. I have done it, still do it as well as many others out there. Although, as a general rule, it is recommended to beginners to keep reptiles in enclosures by themselves. There is a huge amount of species that are perfectly compatible in same enclosure set ups. You should know the rules before you mess around with keeping mixed species together though.

I have a display case now that houses an AZ Mountain King and an AZ Black rattlesnake. These species share relatively the same identical range as one another. They share the smae basic husbandry needs and are quite compatible with one another. Yet, for the average person in herpetoculture, it is something that should not be done for several reasons.

Your friends idea is one that should have had a bit of thinking put into it. Although, I will say, an imagination is a horrible thing to waste. It is nice to have set ups much like this, but an overall planning of what is going on needs to take place here. I see no reason for this said housing scheme, but others relatively close to it can work.

Lizards make the best display animals, because they are like fish, most are diurnal and they are always out and about doing stuff!

Nocturnal snakes can be good display animals as well though. Especially arboreal ones like Emeralds, GTP's, and Jungles! A nice Carpet or GTP in a display tank can be the centerpiece of a room!!

I wouldn't mix species though. Just not a good idea in a relatively small area (relative to the habitat in which they are from).

Yea this wasnt going to be an actual thing to be done, as was said its way to much money and way to much planning but I myself was just wondering if that was "legal" to say...I must say though it would be an incredible display tank!

Do gtp's ever come out of their trees? I always see them in their famous positions :D

I think the trick would be to make it look like there is one big enclosure but to actually have them separate. Fish tank at the bottom, terrestrial landscape for the turtle and an arboreal enclosure above. All decorated with one theme and something fancy to make the dividers look natural. It would be much better/easier with access to the back as well. Just a thought.

Your turtle would eat the fish in a mtter of minutes and likely get to the gtp eventually as well.

You would have to choose your species pretty carefully...

the fish would be purpsolyl for the turtle to eat..how would it get to the gtp though...would it ever come out of the tree, thats my only worry..how do they drink?

They drink droplets, they drink off themselves and they also drink from bowls. Mine always is out cruising about on the ground and above at night so he would definitly be on the ground at times.

That's not a bad idea.
I actually know of a place that has a set up like that, except the snake in question is an emerald tree boa.
He has fish of some sort and two Mata matas. Looks nice. Very naturalistic. Tea stained waters, murky sandy-ish soils and I think he uses a part mangrove, or something like that.

When i have money and my own place, im gonna think back at this lol...id LOVE to have it..but id need like a really good filter system for the turtle and fish so cleaning is easier..would the snake poo into the water..the turtle wouldnt like that, especially if it nails him in the head lmao!

i think the same set up with but replace the turtle with a more compatible species. Im thinking of making something really close but it will have a long open bottom and two standing glass towers with trees one at each end with a small pond looking set up in the middle. with guppys in it
