Acclimating Nicely

Well, I bought a red blood a little while back, and she is coming around very nicely. She switched to f/t rats with NO problems, and is plumping up rapidly. :) I showed pictures of the day I brought her home, take a quick look at that thread:

Well, I have only had her for about a month, so I'm sure her length hasn't changed much; I haven't checked though. But she has eaten outrageously well for me these past four weeks. Let's see, since I have had her, she has had 7 meals, not looking ready to refuse those tastey rats anytime soon. Not bad, eh? ;)

bloods are awesome..to bad their really aggresive...are all bloods like that? how big do they get?

Well, actually this one female I have is as tame as any Ball python, lol. You just have to search around for a tame one, they're definately out there. But you're right, for the most part, bloods tend to be more on the aggressive side. It's just their nature.

It depends on what subspecies or locale, but as far as Sumatran red bloods (which is what I have) or Python curtis brongersmai they get to be about 3-5 feet for males and 4-6 feet for females, but there are 8-10 footers out there, so I've heard. They can weigh upwards 40 pounds as well, once they reach adulthood.

I agree. Sumatran Borgersmai's are, from what I understand, have a better disposition than the Maylasians. Mine has always handled better than even my Ball pythons, not head shy at all, and really *nice*. Now she's 34" and more confident, and I now keep her on sphagnum moss, and sometimes she'll Huff and puff when I take her out. No worries though, I think she can definitely tell when her handler is afraid of her, and that's when she seems the most defensive. I'm cautious and confident with her, and she's just fine.
I've heard that the sumatran borgersmai's tend to get somewhat larger than the maylasians, but 4-6' seems to be the norm. Black bloods are smaller and tend to be 3-5'. Borneo's fall in between generally. They're all hefty, which makes them all very impressive. Most any of these become easily handled, but still demand your full attention, as they are large and could potentially deliver a nasty bite. But really, any snake can do that, and they're all somewhat defensive, just their nature.

Sumatrans for the most part are just fine - this is both the reds and the black bloods. I have a totally tame Sumatran, and another totally tame one on the way, and every sumatran red I've encountered to date has been perfectly handleable. The Malaysians and Banka Island locailities on the other hand, will bite your hand off if given the opportunity. :) Each snake is different though - I'm sure there are tame Malaysians and Bangkas out there.
